After making it to the dead-end street, I took in the scenery and noticed all the cute clapboard houses lining either side of the road had been decorated for fall.

The sound of gentle waves lapping against the beach was behind me. Each cottage home was painted a different vibrant color. Many had boats or motorized water vehicles parked under a car porch, along with a segment of a chain-link fence to divide the properties. All the vehicles were winterized for the season.

My arrival hadn’t gone unnoticed. As I passed by the houses, the dogs in the yards barked at me. Most of the houses looked dark, and I could only imagine the residents were all at the seaside getting ready for tonight’s festival fireworks and big to-do, since tomorrow the festival activities would be moving more toward Holiday Park.

Holiday Junction was honestly pure charm. Too bad the murders loomed over such a festive time here.

A silhouette stood at the end of the sandy street near the rickety bridge built out of weathered boards. I smiled when I recognized it was Darren, waiting exactly where he wanted me to meet him.

“What took you so long?” Darren asked, back to looking like a disheveled bar owner.

His eyes grazed the top of my shoulder, and I looked back to see what he’d seen.

“Why so jumpy?” I asked when the only things I noticed were the few seaside cottage houses on the dead-end street. Time was slipping past as the sun was starting to kiss the edge of the ocean.

“We can talk while we go see Vern.” He meant Vern McKenna, the wood-carver who made our Merry Maker sign.

“I thought you didn’t have time for all that.” The sarcasm came spewing out of my mouth. Instantly, I felt bad. “I’m sorry. I know you’re working really hard in school, and I admire that. I didn’t take into consideration that Diffy Delk is pretty much the only lawyer in Holiday Junction and someone might be using him for legal representation in these murders.”

“I’m sorry too.” He drew his eyes back to mine and looked down at me. “As soon as I said those things to you, I felt horrible and realized, too, that I have more than just classes to take. I have a life. Responsibilities like the bar and us.”

Hearing him say “us” made my heart leap. I’d never truly had a boyfriend before, and I was very grateful I wasn’t like most of my friends back in Normal. They were all either married or having babies when I
