“And you believe this attempt will be made upon us?” asked Sylvester Lovelace, who—like Elspeth Beaumount—had never lost an accent indicative of having been born of middle class-middle management origins in the “stockbroker belt” of England.

As had become their habit since their relationship developed beyond that of a mere investigative team while handling the Colismides case, Woman Deputy Alice Fayde and Deputy Brad Counter had spent what remained of the night together. [27] Since it was closer, they had used her apartment, where he, too, had a change of clothing from the attire they had worn for the garden party prior to logging on watch the previous afternoon. Knowing how little time they had for sleeping, they had shared her bed without anything other than that taking place, as had happened on similar occasions in the past. After eating breakfast on rising—experience having taught them always to take a meal while there was an opportunity to do so before going on duty—clad in a less luxurious functional pattern and each armed in the usual manner, they had been ready to resume their duties despite the small amount of rest granted to them.

The team had reached the Deputies’ Squad Room by half past eight and checked on the little progress made in the attempt to discover the identity of the man who shot Patrolman Merton. With that done, instead of attending the “show” in the auditorium, Alice and Brad had formulated a line of action to be used with the intention of circumventing the holdup of the bank in Evans Hill that Maximillian Madden claimed was to be forthcoming. Not the least of this had been the way Brad had discovered the home telephone number of the manager despite its being unlisted in the city’s directory. Because of a recent spate of complaints in the Gusher City Mirror accusing the local and federal law-enforcement agencies in Rockabye County of “invading the privacy” of subscribers with unlisted numbers, the public utilities company concerned now asked for a warrant signed by a judge before they would disclose such information. To obtain the legal authorization would have required some time, but the blond giant had circumvented the need to do so.

Alice felt that the means by which this was achieved was further proof of the advantages to be gained through having a partner whose family’s status gave him access to sources not available to other peace officers. In the interests of diplomacy, however, it had been Deputy Ricardo Alvarez as day watch commander who contacted Lovelace and, without explaining the full reason for the request, asked if he would come to the Sheriff’s Office. With his typical English middle class-middle management ego appeased, he had a touch condescendingly agreed.

Upon arrival and learning the full reason his presence was requested, Lovelace had not attempted to conceal his surprise over the news he had been given and over discovering that a female peace officer was to be in
