CHAPTER XI
WHEN THEY WERE STANDING on the pavement outside of Lady Marbleheadâs house, Mr Powell asked, âWhat do you intend to do now, Melamed?â
âI shall visit the pawnshops and moneylenders. Can you give me a description of the bracelet?â
Mr Powell could and did. He then added, âWhen Lord Marblehead was still alive they would often go to dinner parties, where Lady Marblehead would show off the bracelet and tell the story about Captain Morgan.â
âI was not trying to trick you, when I asked for the description.â
Mr Powell shrugged. âI would not have blamed you if you had suspected me. The thought did cross my mind that I would much rather prefer to pawn someone elseâs jewels than my own.â
âMost people would.â
âI suppose you can find a way to have Mr Taylorâs rooms searched, if the bracelet does not turn up in the usual places.â
âI suppose I can. Although I am not entirely convinced that Mr Clyde is as innocent as he would like us to believe. He himself admitted that he knew about the bracelet and where it was hidden. He also had the opportunity to remove the key from Lady Marbleheadâs pocket when she was ill and he was alone with her in her bedchamber.â
âShould I try to find out if Mr Clyde has made any unexpected expenditures, the sort that a young man would make if he suddenly came into some money?â
âIt would help if we had all the facts.â
âAnd what about Jeanette, should we try to locate her?â
âAt this point, I think no. Let us first try to find the bracelet. Once it is found, we will know who took it. May I invite you to dine with me this evening?â
âThat does not give either one of us much time to make our inquiries.â
âNo, but if someone really did try to poison Lady Marblehead, we do not want to give our poisoner time to make another attempt on her life.â
