CHAPTER ELEVEN
After hours of working on the tea room, Laney had just replaced the cover on the bucket of white paint when she heard a thump at the front door. Startled, she went absolutely still, listening. After a few minutes of hearing nothing out of the ordinary, she marched through the foyer and flung open the front door, ready to do battle with any boogeyman who might be on the porch. The fact that it was broad daylight, just before lunchtime, significantly bolstered her resolve.
She immediately saw the source of the sound. A rolled-up afternoon edition newspaper sat innocently on the welcome mat.
âOh, my.â Laney chuckled, shaking her head at her initial overreaction.
She picked up the paper and brought it inside. It was time for lunch anyway and reading the paper would help her pass the time while she ate, because, as usual, Roger was nowhere to be found.
Laney wanted to keep lunch simple, so that she could quickly eat and get back to work on the tea room. She whipped up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and took giant bites of it while heating up the peach cobbler from the café in the microwave. When her dessert was warmed, she plopped it onto the plate next to her sandwich and headed for the small table in the main dining area that she and Roger had been using for their meals since she arrived.
When she took the rubber band off of her copy of the Iberden Chronicle, her eyes widened at the headline that screamed out at her: One Shot Fired in Mayorâs Murder!
The Medical Examinerâs findings had been released, along with a short statement from Detective Worth.
Laney pored carefully over every line of the story to make sure she had all the facts. In addition to revealing the cause of death, a gunshot, the article made a vague reference to pressure, coming from law enforcement at the state level, to wrap up the investigation as quickly as possible, which Laney found odd. Why would state representatives care about a murder case in a tiny town like Iberden? Detective Worth was quoted as being âoptimistic that the case would close very soon.â
The article gave no details about the investigation, the crime, or a potential motive, leaving Laney with far more questions than answers. She was fairly certain that nearly everyone in town had probably read the article and she expected to hear talk of it throughout the day, once she went out and about. She couldnât really blame the townies. The mayorâs murder was undoubtedly the biggest and most awful event that had ever made the news in Iberden.
When she turned the page, Laney saw the announcement for Mayor Andrewsâ funeral, which would take place later this afternoon.
Her phone rang, and Laneyâs heart nearly stopped when she saw Detective Worthâs number on the caller ID.
âLaney speaking,â she answered, trying not to sound as rattled as she felt.
The detective asked her to come to the station, and, glancing at her watch, Laney promised to be there in ten minutes.
