I FIND MRS. CRUMLY

She sees me coming

and scurries to my side.

I scoop her up.

Feel her ruffled feathers

in the safety

of my arms.

Three of Nanna’s chickens

never left the chicken yard.

Nanna and I

round up

three more.

But we cannot find

my Buttercup.

Not anywhere.

I check the barn.

Around the house.

Inside our hideaway.

I even check

the milkweed field.

But Buttercup is gone.
