Chapter 7
Leslie
Our theory turned out to be a good one and the last car was registered to a brother of a missing woman.
âI hate having to do phone calls like that because heâs never going to see her again.â I bemoaned being made the bearer of bad news.
âYou donât have any hope of her turning up?â
âNo, these killers are completely focused and donât have any extra room for error. If itâs your birthday then thereâs a ninety-nine percent chance youâre going to die.â
âThatâs very pessimistic. I know things happen, but youâre saying that we canât catch this killer. Youâre way too young for that.â
âNot really,â I glanced at Ryan and knew that he felt the same way, âWeâre not going to stop trying to save lives. There isnât even a suspect at the moment. How can we save them if we donât even have a direction to look in?â
âIf you think weâre pessimistic now, then come back in a few months if this continues, weâre going to be downright depressed. I already feel like we canât win, but Iâm going to keep trying because if I donât then my friend died for no reason.â
âUm, maâam could you answer a question for us?â I stopped the waitress when she brought the check. âWe were wondering whatâs the next city that caters to tourist further down toward L.A.?â
âThat would be Paso Robles. Itâs one of the larger towns, but there are several that are much smaller as well. They all have a few places for tourist, but the bigger ones have a few more choices.â She collected the card from Agent Watson, âWere you looking to stay somewhere tonight?â
âWe were thinking of somewhere that had overnight or long term parking in case we wanted to stay on the beach for a few days. Iâd hate to have the car towed just because we were out enjoying the sunshine.â Ryan slid an arm around the back of the booth behind me.
âKing City and Paso Robles both have an airport with longer term parking there, if you need to park one car for a few days. Iâll be right back with this.â
âGuess we can check out whichever comes first and stay in the larger one for the night. That was a good idea to ask the waitress. I donât know why my boss is trying to keep you guys from helping. Youâre both smart and have a unique perspective.â Agent Watson complemented us.
âUnique perspective and weâre smart.â I winked at Ryan, âI think he just described the strange cousin that you barely acknowledge.â
âIn Texas, we call it thinking outside of the box. I hate to think like the killer, but you do have to think of every possible scenario.â Ryan grinned at Agent Watsonâs discomfort.
âLook can you forget I said that. Itâs refreshing to have someone that isnât trying to play be the rule book. Criminals donât follow the FBI guidelines and weâll never catch them if we donât at least consider other possibilities.â He blushed.
