Lyra

Two Months Later

Lyra peaked out of the front window at the woman who stood on Tank’s porch. She looked oddly familiar with her long dark hair and she seemed to know just where Lyra was hiding. She looked back at her, through the window, causing Lyra to childishly jump out of the way.

“What are you doing?” Tank whispered from behind her, causing her to jump and scream.

“Fuck,” she barked.

Tank’s chuckle set her on edge and she felt about ready to clobber him. “Sorry,” he offered. “Didn’t mean to scare you. Lil was done swimming and I told her to go upstairs and change into some dry clothes. Why are you lurking by the window?” he asked.

Lyra nodded to the front porch where the woman was still waiting. “Someone is at the door,” she said. “You told me not to answer the door without you and well, I thought you were at the beach with Delilah.” She had stayed behind, not feeling well again. She just couldn’t seem to shake the damn stomach bug that had been plaguing her.

Tank kissed the top of her head, “Good girl,” he praised. “I’ll answer it and find out what she wants.”

Delilah came barreling down the stairs, her wet hair hanging down into her face. “She wants to talk to us, Mommy,” Lil said.

“Us?” Lyra repeated. “How do you know that, Baby?”

“I saw her in my dream. Her name is Nena,” Lil said.

“How can we be sure?” Lyra questioned.

Tank pulled the front door open. “Well, there’s only one way to figure this all out,” he offered. “Just ask her.” He pointed to the stranger at the door and she smiled and nodded at Lil and Lyra.

“Hi Nena,” Delilah smiled and waved at the woman who returned the gesture. Maybe her daughter was right and she did see the stranger coming for them. She had been dreaming so much over the past two months, it was probable she was having visions. Beth warned her that her own visions had started around the same age as Lil. If she was being honest, her own started then too, but she was too afraid to embrace them. Lyra shoved them down as far as she could, trying to hide the fact that she was a seer.

“You must be Lyra,” the woman said, holding out her hand.

“I’m sorry,” Lyra said. “You have me at a disadvantage.”

“Of course.” The woman lowered her hand, realizing Lyra wasn’t about to exchange pleasantries with a complete stranger. “I’m Oryana Nez,” she said. “But you can call me Nena.”

“See, Mommy,” Lil said. “I told you her name is Nena.”

“Yes, Baby. How about you go watch some television and have a snack? You must be tired after spending the day at the beach with Tank.” Lyra watched as her strong-willed daughter stared her down and worried that she was going to give her a fight. When Lil seemed to realize she wasn’t going to budge on the matter, she sighed and turned to dramatically walk out of the room.
