Dressed in uniform, Grace took a quick glance around the ice cream parlor as she removed her sunglasses. Yet again, she hadn’t seen Libby’s little Sentra, and didn’t see her on the main floor, either. Shoving her sunglasses to the top of her head, she jogged up the stairs to get coffee for the first time that week before her shift began. Admittedly, she’d missed her caramel macchiato.

Upstairs, it was fairly quiet, as she’d missed the morning rush by not having to be at work until eleven. She walked up to the counter, her smile growing. “Mayor!”

“Hello there, Detective,” Faith said with a bright smile as she hurried around the bar, the two meeting in a tight hug. “Good to see you.”

“I haven’t seen you here in forever,” Grace said, walking to her place in front of the cash register as Faith walked back behind the bar and met her there. “Yes, well I’m doing double duty. With Wyatt now in her third trimester, we want to keep her home and relaxed, and with Libby home sick, it leaves me holding the bag.”

Grace’s smile instantly fell away, even as she tried to keep her voice sounding normal. “Yeah? What’s going on with Libby?”

“She’s sick as a dog, from what her mom said,” Faith explained. “Your normal?” At Grace’s nod, she tapped the buttons on the register as she continued talking. “Has the flu. She’s been out for about four days now.”

Grace felt a combination of concern and guilt. Had she not kept her out in the rain… “Have you spoken to her?” she asked quietly, handing Faith the money for her drink.

“No, but Wyatt did,” Faith said, punching in the amount and giving Grace her change, which went promptly into the tip jar. “She’s the one who talked her into staying home that first day. Since then, her mom has been calling in for her.” She shook her head as the two moved down the length of the bar for Faith to make the latte. “Poor kid.” She spared a glance at Grace. “You should go see her. Probably cheer her up since you guys are friends.”

Grace nodded as she blew out a long, slow breath. “Yeah.”
