As I could cast with one hand but couldnât fish without both, I improvised. Mr. Wiggles went into a saddle bag, which I secured with a second stringer I found in the tackle box. If Mr. Wiggles found his way to freedom, then so be it, but I wanted to fish before I lost my chance.
I looked forward to seeing Jessica and our children, but I also wanted to savor my last few minutes of peaceful solitude.
In the time it took for my wife to figure out how to find the trail and get to me, I caught six fish, all of which were big enough to keep and eat. They went onto the stringer with my striped bass, resulting in chaos, an unexpected plunge into the river, and a mess. Thanks to having the foresight to tie the stringer to me, I didnât lose my prizes, although my new phone didnât survive its bath.
The clop of horse hooves announced my wifeâs arrival, and I dragged my string of fish onto shore, far enough from the water they wouldnât flop to freedom. I dripped, sighing over my less than dignified appearance.
Chocolate Cupcake whinnied her alarm at the arrival of strange horses, and I abandoned my catch to soothe her, stroking her nose and talking to her, aware she might bite out of fear. âIf you could not terrify Chocolate Cupcake, Iâd be appreciative. I think the other horses are scaring her.â
While I couldnât see anyone through the trees and the curve in the trail, the hooves clattered before quieting.
âYouâre going to turn my stables upside down on me, arenât you?â Jessica complained, and a moment later, she walked down the trail.
Neither of our children accompanied her, and I narrowed my eyes. âWhere are the kids?â
âGeoffâs with them at the trail head. We didnât have a pony suitable for Deidre, and Adamâs fussy. I asked Eddie to help watch Adam. Their details are with them, but Geoffâs in a mood, so theyâll be fine. It changes our cooking plans for tonight, but thereâs a royal ranch not too far away weâll stay at tonight. I agreed to settle for taking you home tomorrow in exchange for ranch time today.â
When Geoff was in a mood, he tended to overreact to anything he viewed as a threat. I relaxed, nodding. Chocolate Cupcake shoved her head against my chest, pressing as close as she could without knocking me off my feet. âYouâre all right?â
âI am now. Why are you wet?â
I pointed at my fish. âI fell into the river while trying to get them back into the water without losing them. Fortunately, I didnât lose our dinner.â
My wifeâs brows shot up, and she strolled to my catches. âYou werenât kidding about that fish. Itâs huge. Itâs a striped bass. That oneâs a catfish, and the rest are also striped bass. Good job. You strung them right and everything, too.â
âWell, I just followed your directions. I figured I just needed to add a new one to the line.
