Billie was pacing the floor on tenterhooks, wishing she hadn’t opened her damn mouth. Now, here they were, hiding out in her parents’ home, of all places.

“If you don’t pack that in, I’m going to smack you.”

“We shouldn’t have come here. You shouldn’t have taken her,” Billie shouted, pointing at the girl they had tied up sitting on the couch.

Daz took a few steps into her space, his forehead touching hers. “Don’t tell me what I should and shouldn’t do. Get us something to eat. I take it your parents have got food in the kitchen?”

“Yes, Mum always has the cupboards stocked well. Hey, I ain’t no chef. I didn’t sign up to do all the cooking.”

He turned to glance at the snivelling girl in the corner. “You want to end up with a busted nose, like her?”

Billie rushed into the kitchen and rifled through the cupboards. She found a few cans of baked beans and went to the freezer where she knew her mother kept a supply of bread for emergency purposes. This was one of those, wasn’t it? Her parents were away at present, caring for her grandmother who had recently had a hip replacement. Her mother and father had retired early, once her father had sold his travel business for a seven-figure sum which had set them up for the rest of their lives. They spent most of their time either travelling abroad or visiting relatives. Her mother had rung her last week to say they’d be away for the next few weeks, ensuring her gran, who was in her eighties, recovered from the surgery. Her gran was still an independent lady and lived in a bungalow in Lincolnshire.

Again, once they had arrived, they’d put the car in the garage, out of sight of the other residents. This was Clifton, the posh area of Bristol, where it was evident how much money people were making by the pristine condition their homes and gardens were in.

Billie stared out the kitchen window at the immaculate garden just springing into life after the wet winter they’d had. Why bring him here? I hate him for what he’s turned me into. Why did I have to mention this place?

A breath on the back of her neck made her gasp. “What are you lovingly gonna fix me to eat then?”

“Beans on toast. I’m defrosting the bread now. It’ll be a good fifteen minutes yet.”

His arms encircled her waist, and he nuzzled his face into her neck. “I hate it when we fall out. I wish I could make it up to you—not possible with her in there.”

“I hate it, too. Why take someone else, Daz? That wasn’t part of the plan.”

He spun her around and glared at her. The peaceful atmosphere suddenly dispersed, and his anger mounted once more. “Are you questioning me again? What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you want us to get caught?”

“No. Please, don’t shout at me. You’re making me a nervous wreck.”

“Stop trying my patience then.
