CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Police arrived to apprehend Marlon Greef. After they’d gone over the details with the local authorities, Rylie stomped toward Michael’s truck, sighing in defeat. It was coming upon noon, now, and this case that she’d hoped to find a quick end to was now likely to drag on. They’d taken one step forward, and two steps back.

“Okay, okay,” Michael said as he started the engine. “Maybe it’s not wrapped up in a nice, tidy bow. But we did find out who killed those girls. That’s a good thing.”

“I guess. Sure. You’re right. It is good,” she admitted.

Still, it didn’t feel like enough.

“And maybe the police will question him further and find out he’s our man.”

She shook her head adamantly. “He’s not our man, Bris.”

Brisbane had been backing out toward the main road, but now, he stopped and looked at her. “What do you mean? Yeah, I’ll admit it’s iffy. But he could be lying about not killing Marie and Jessie.”

“He’s not,” she said simply.

A crease appeared on his forehead. “And how do you figure that?”

She reached into her bag and pulled out her phone. “Because based on the crime scene photos, the killer of Jessie Vega and Marie Bottoms was right handed. And Marlon Greef was clearly left-handed. I could tell by the bow.”

Michael’s mouth opened, and for a moment, he didn’t say anything. “Wait, how do you know the recent victims were murdered by a right-handed person?”

“Well, I don’t know for sure. The killer might be ambidextrous. Because there were pressure marks on both women’s shoulders from where he held them down with his left hand. Of course, he’d probably use his dominant hand to hold the pillow over her mouth. Right?”

She thrust the photo under his nose and he nodded. “Okay. I didn’t notice that. Marlon could be ambidextrous, too, you know.”

“No. Not likely. Left-handed bows cost a hell of a lot more. Why would anyone pay that much extra for no reason?”

He nodded. “Makes sense. Spoken like a true southpaw.”

She held up her left hand and smiled. “That’s right. We always get scammed, having to pay more for everything. It’s discrimination.”

“Hmm. I didn’t realize the trauma you left-handers had to go through,” he said, shifting into gear and driving onto the road. “How did you know about the bows, anyway?”

“I have a friend,” she thought, thinking of her buddy Hal Buxton, her surrogate father, and how he’d bought Rylie her first bow, when she was only twelve. They’d go out hunting sometimes, and over the course of a few years, though he’d been a curmudgeonly widower and loner at first, he’d come to enjoy her company as much as she enjoyed his.

“That’s mysterious. That Rich guy?”

“No. That Hal guy. Remember him?”

He nodded slowly, and said, “Right,” in a way that made her think he was suspicious of her answer.

She stared at him. He’d been acting slightly jealous, ever since he’d met Cooper Rich, her old friend from the Seattle FBI office. At first, she’d insisted there was nothing going on, but then Cooper had gone and professed how much he’d missed her.
