Chapter 10

When Arabella emerged from the companionway onto the forward deck at just past sunset, she saw Keaton and Ruby standing on the starboard side, steeped in pale lamplight and deep conversation. She smiled. She had not realized even when she chose the dress for Ruby that the other woman would look so beautiful wearing it. Arabella had wanted to give her something special. Even having met her so recently, she could tell Ruby Runyon was a kind and gentle person, one who had been denied the opportunity to make the most of herself, her life.

Keaton also obviously appreciated the young woman’s new look, if the expression on his face was any indication. These developments, too, exceeded Arabella’s most fervent hopes. Keaton needed a diversion. He had earned it, having to deal with Reynaldo on a daily basis. The man was suited to much better things than being the prince’s nursemaid, but the obligation he felt to the royal del Fuego family ran too deep for him to abandon Reynaldo. He should be rewarded for that.

She had seen the way he looked at Ruby the first night she was aboard. Last night, as Arabella shopped for clothes for the young woman, she was struck by an idea. An idea that now seemed to be progressing very nicely. She was grateful for whatever fateful current carried Ruby into their midst. Whatever Arabella had to do to keep her on board for a while longer, she would do it. Even if it meant asking Reynaldo for a favor or two along the way.

Right now, however, Arabella did not have to think about her wretched excuse for a fiancé. Right now, her wretched fiancé was nowhere to be seen. He was most assuredly not alone in his absence. She was confident that he and Superdolt Dacia would not make an appearance until dinner was served in a few hours. The two of them generally seemed to be occupied in the late afternoons and early evenings. Which was fine with Arabella. Today, at least. Because today there was something very important she must do while Reynaldo was occupied. Now was as good a time as any.

She adjusted the filmy ivory shawl she had thrown over the sleeveless, pale pink sheath and pearls she had donned for the evening’s festivities. Then she ran a hand over her hair to be certain it was well contained in its chignon. In fact, all of her must be well contained tonight. Because what she was planning to do was anything but well contained.

In fact it was madness.

But not much in her life had made sense for the past twelve months, had it? Which was not unexpected, considering that her life had gone nowhere for the past twelve months. Certainly Arabella herself had gone to many places, having traveled from one side of the world to the other. But her spirit, her hopes, her dreams… All of these had remained static. Worse than static. All had moved backward and grown smaller.
