“BOMB!” Norman Peavy ran between the desks of the newsroom, screaming at everyone to get out of the building before storming up the stairs to Ed’s office.

“Ed!” Norman panted in the doorway and saw Ed was talking on the phone. Although Ed scowled angrily at him, Norman began waving his arms at him to hang up.

Ed politely asked his caller for a moment and covered the receiver with his hand. Looking up at Norman, he spoke through gritted teeth. “What is wrong with you? Can’t you see I’m on the phone?”

“We got a bomb threat. You have to get out of the building. You have to get out now! Hang up!”

Ed waved his hand to brush Norman off. “Clear the building and call the police. I’ll be there in a minute.” The call was important. He was trying to convince the doctor who had given him counsel for his article to attend the meeting tomorrow, but the news of the bomb threat did give him pause. It would be a surefire way to delay the printing of the follow-up articles he had planned on the plastics plant and the history of the BonLark partners’ endeavors. It would also flush him out of the building if he were the personal target. Perhaps, it was better to delay his departure until police were on scene to secure the situation.

Norman, an otherwise demure and quiet figure, was not tolerating any delays and refused to entertain the many excuses the employees lodged against leaving their desk. “OUT! I am not asking you. I’m telling you. GET OUT NOW!” Norman held a loaded finger pointed at the door leading to Tarragon Street and blocked the insults his co-workers tried to hurl his way.

Once the line formed at the door seemed complete, sans Ed, Norman called 9-1-1 on his cell phone and followed the procession out. “This is Norman Peavy at the Spicetown Star. We have just received a bomb threat and I am evacuating the building now. Please send an officer to our area.”

Georgia Marks asked Norman to hold as she alerted the Spicetown officers on patrol to go to the newspaper and told Conrad what was happening. Conrad grabbed Briscoe’s leash which had Briscoe bounding from the dispatch cubicle, sensing some excitement was afoot.

“Tell Norman to take the staff to the parking lot on Clove Street beside Hart & Grace Tax Service office. Then call the county sheriff’s office and tell them we need the bomb squad.” Conrad waited for Georgia to give Norman his directions over the phone as he hooked Briscoe’s leash to his harness. “Now, tell Asher to drive over and watch Ed Poindexter’s house. This could be a diversion, and we need eyes over there.”

“Gotcha, Chief.” Georgia hit the radio and called Asher’s codes to switch channels so she could send him to Ed’s house.

Briscoe whined with urgency and dragged Conrad to the squad car. He started the car and waited for the Bluetooth to connect before punching the speed dial button for Cora.
