I smile down at my phone as I text the woman in question.

Me: Hey baby. Missing you already. I’m having a family lunch tomorrow, and would love for you to meet them.

I put my phone down on the table, expecting it won’t take long for her to reply. I’m hoping this might distract her from wanting to talk later about my past; a past I haven’t wanted to discuss since it happened. I used women as an escape. They served one purpose: sex. Nothing more.

Yet, Riley has been different right from the start. She captured my interest and not just for her gorgeous body. She didn’t fall over herself to get me interested in her. In fact, she told me to leave her alone at the bar. It was me who insisted. I chased her and I want to keep her.

Deciding I need a whiskey, I head over to my kitchen counter and pour one. I take a sip, allowing the brown liquid to burn my throat. I can’t believe I want to put a label on what Riley and I are.

What will she say? How will she react?

I hear my phone buzz again and I slowly make my way over to the table.

It’s not Riley; just an email.

Why hasn’t she responded?

I pace the lounge with Poppy wagging her tail, following behind me. She thinks I’m playing with her. Another half an hour goes by and I still don’t get a response.

Has Riley lied to me? Is she really meeting her friends?

I’m overthinking this.

Maybe I should take Poppy for a quick walk to calm myself down. Yeah, that might work.

By the time Poppy and I return home, I still haven’t heard from Riley and I’ve had enough. I’m fucking going to BlueDreams and getting an answer. Ignoring the warning flags inside my head, telling me this isn’t going to end well, I grab my keys and head out.
