Chapter 30

After days of negotiating the price of the house, Rose texted Dave. The owners of 147 Montgomery Circle had accepted his offer.

Montgomery is a go. I know you can’t call during school hours. Text me when you have a break and we can discuss next steps. Congratulations!

While his third-grade class was at music, Dave peeked at his phone, smiled and ducked out to call Rose.

“Montgomery Circle’s really mine?”

“Providing you can get your mortgage,” said Rose.

“I’ll get my mortgage,” said Dave. “I’m putting fifty percent down and I’ll get a veteran’s loan, no problem. You don’t get turned down for those unless you’re a total deadbeat. I’ll file all the paperwork tonight. Thank you for everything, Rose.”

Over the next six weeks, Dave submitted every financial document the loan officer asked for, hired a house inspector, had documents notarized and held his breath. Sitting next to Rose at his March closing, Dave signed the last page of the contract and the lawyer handed over the keys.

“I’m a homeowner,” said a smiling Dave as he and Rose left the attorney’s offices. “I’ve got the movers coming tomorrow. Although I don’t have much stuff: a bed, dresser and a bookcase along with some personal items. I’ll need to buy some new furniture to fill my new house.”

“Sounds like you will,” said Rose, happy she had helped to make his dream come true.

“Would you let me take you to dinner one night so I could properly thank you?”

Her breath caught. “That’s not necessary,” she said, looking away. “I was just doing my job.”

“I’m new in town as you know and you’ve been so helpful,” said Dave. “I’ve got an idea. How about you, Mary and I go for lunch at the arcade after I move? My treat.”

“How can I say no to that?” said Rose throwing up her arms. “Mary will be ecstatic.”

Two weeks later, on a Saturday, Dave, Rose and Mary went to a large game arcade in a neighboring town. The place was crawling with kids. Mary was soon obsessed with several video games, which gave Dave and Rose time to talk.

“Look at my kid,” said Rose, her eyes following Mary playing with some of the other kids, “she’s on cloud nine right now. When I told her you were taking us to the arcade, she nearly passed out. I’m so grateful you’re her teacher. I worry about her.”

“I have a lot of kids in my class. Some are easy, do their homework on time and raise their hands. I also have my share of disrupters who constantly need attention and redirection. It’s true Mary is a little different, but in my opinion, in a good way. She thinks differently than the other kids. She sees things they miss. She looks at life through a different lens. With the right guidance, I believe Mary’s capable of so many things.”

“Mr. Z, will you play the Spiderman game with me?” said Mary as she came running across the room towards them.

“Duty calls,” he said with a look of surrender as Mary pulled him into the crowd.
