Chapter 18

Five days had passed and the feeling of danger from the escaped Frankie Faulkner was subsiding with every false sighting of him reported in the London area. It was time for the next stage of their plan to save Brian Watkins’s company and attend the court to prevent the winding up order being granted.

Alec was excited, rehearsing his lines for the judge and poring over the legal papers that he and Phil had had prepared for their offer to invest in the company and pay off the creditors. Phil sat calmly waiting for the police escort to take them to court. Dave Carter had decided protection was still needed and he joined the small party that set out in the morning, a party that included Scary man, who Phil had insisted on as their private bodyguard, and a very subdued Amy who kept her thoughts to herself.

It was Amy who was aware of a subtle change in Scary man but couldn’t describe it to herself, never mind anyone else. Today there was something different about this big man, apparently emotionless, as if hewn out a large rock. His head, which usually sat comfortably on his enormous shoulders, was lifted up and his eyes were more alert as if sensing danger. Perhaps it was just that he was taking his bodyguard duties seriously but Amy felt more uneasy than usual in their protector’s company.

Scary man wasn’t used to solving his own dilemmas, much more comfortable when he was told by Charlie Phelan to do this or that, perhaps break an arm or leg of someone reluctant to do business with his boss. He liked it when Charlie had once described his job title as his “Persuader”. His old mother embraced the euphemism too, proudly telling neighbours how her son wore a shirt and tie to work as a persuader in a businessman’s office, making it sound as if he were some high flying salesman.

But today he had a decision to make. He had been the eyes and ears of mad Frankie Faulkner for several days and knew the resumed bankruptcy hearing offered Effin an opportunity to get to Phil. When Scary man had asked why he didn’t just leave the country and take on a new identity Frankie stared at him for a long time. He had a gun and a mission. No one had ever messed him about before, but Phil was responsible for ruining his crime business and getting him jailed for life. The madness came into his eyes as he finally answered: “I don’t care what happens to me as long as I get that piece of shit and anyone who gets in my way.”

The problem for Scary man was that it was him who was likely to be in the way if he wanted the big pay day promised by Phil from the Watkins company land scam. A payday that he saw as the pension to take care of him as the years did to his
