CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The ride to the high school where Russ Chaffin taught and coached wasn’t going to be a long one. Morgan wanted to be prepared when they arrived.

“So what will we do when we get there?” Morgan asked. “Good cop, bad cop again?”

“Play it as it lays,” Danielle said. “How Chaffin reacts will dictate a lot of how we act. Let’s hope he plays it cool.”

“And if he doesn’t?” Smithson hadn’t put up much of a fight, but who knew what they would face with Chaffin?

“I’ll deal with it.” She slid her sunglasses down to look over them at Morgan. “Just me. Right? No heroics from you, okay?”

Morgan held his hands up in front of himself. “No heroics from me. I promise. I’ve learned my lesson.”

She made a funny noise in the back of her throat. “I hope so. For both of our sakes. The paperwork for injured consultants is huge and I really hate paperwork.”

Morgan laughed. “You know I was always just trying to help, right?”

Danielle’s face stilled. “I do know and I appreciate it. We just need to find a way for you to help that keeps you safe.”

Morgan settled back in his seat. He’d made a few too many attempts to “help” Danielle during their last case together. She’d been justifiably angry with him and had even thrown him off the case altogether at one point. He’d seen the error of his ways, though. Danielle was more than capable of taking care of herself. The type of help she needed from him had nothing to do with running down and subduing bad guys.

She needed his powers of observation and his medical knowledge.

They pulled into the parking lot of the high school. Over on the field, they could see a group of girls with Lacrosse sticks lined up halfway down the field from the goal. One after the other, they’d scoop a ball up off the ground with a stick, run to an orange cone set up midway and to the left of the goal, do a spin turn, and run to a second cone set up in front of the goal, where they’d shoot.

A man wearing a baseball cap called out, “Good one, Jessie! Keep it up!” Morgan recognized him from the photo that Henry had found of Chaffin.

Chaffin put his hand up to his mouth for a moment and then slipped it back into his pocket. Then he turned to another man standing next to him and quietly said something. That man made a notation on the clipboard he was holding.

Danielle approached the man in the baseball cap. “Russ Chaffin?”

Chaffin turned and looked at her, letting his gaze roam up and down her body, before saying, “Who’s asking?”

Morgan had some doubts as to whether or not Lisa’s work on toning down the man’s sexual aggression had been effective. He felt his own anger rising at the man’s blatant leering and took a step forward, then tried to calm himself. Danielle would have this handled. She’d let him know if she needed or wanted help.
