CHAPTER THIRTEEN

JOHN HYDE arrived in the incident room at nine fifteen the following morning to find Bill Headley and Tony Robinson crouched in front of a computer.

Bill looked up. “Morning, Sarge,” he said, poking the cuff of his shirt back to stare ostentatiously at his watch.

The sergeant grinned. “Very funny, Bill. I had to pick the boss up on my way in and run him to the station. I might give one of you the job of fetching him back this afternoon.” He nodded towards the computer. “Anything interesting?”

“It’s the full forensic report on yesterday’s crime scene,” Tony said. “The attack on Adrian and Inspector Liddell. I’ll print it for you.”

“I’ll be in the boss’s office. Bring it in and we’ll have a . . . a mini-conference.” He looked around. Where’s Lucy?”

“Up at the hospital, getting the latest on the casualties,” Bill said, and winked. “I think she wanted an excuse to see Adrian.”

Later, when the three of them were seated around Blade’s desk, Hyde read quickly through the printout.

“This doesn’t take us any further than yesterday’s preliminary report,” he said. “We’ll leave it here for the boss to see.” A shadow darkened the doorway. “Can I help you, sir?” Hyde asked.

“I’m looking for Superintendent Blade,” the commandant said.

“He’s out, sir. He’ll be back late this afternoon. Is there anything I can do for you?

Chaytor-Gill hesitated. “No, not really. I happened to mention some people who came to our open day and . . . no, no, it doesn’t matter.”

Before the visitor could leave, Hyde said quickly, “The superintendent briefed us about them, sir, so if there’s anything else you can add that might help us . . . ?”

“Well, it’s just a picture.” The commandant hesitated, then held out a large envelope. “The official photographer took it. It shows me talking to a group that includes all the people I spoke about. I’ve captioned it.”

Hyde took the envelope. “Thank you very much, sir. That’s great. I’ll make sure he sees it as soon as he gets back.”

He waited until the commandant had gone before slitting open the envelope. Then, as another figure darkened the doorway, he laid it flat on the desk. “Well, look what the wind’s blown in!”

Lucy walked in, smiling, followed by a sheepish-looking Adrian Harper, wearing a large bandage around his head. The three detectives gathered around him, pumping his hand and congratulating him on his speedy recovery. While Lucy was despatched to fetch him a cup of coffee, he admitted that he still had a slight headache and was a bit wobbly on his feet, but he was anxious not to miss out on the investigation.

Lucy returned with a tray of coffees for them all, so they moved from Blade’s small office and sat down at one end of the large conference table in the outer room. Hyde took the commandant’s envelope with him.

“Well, the very latest is this,” he told Adrian, drawing out the picture, while they crowded around to look. The photograph showed a casually dressed group of eight people, all smiling happily.
