THIRTY-FOUR
The great Tao flows everywhere, both to the left and to the right. The ten thousand things depend upon it; it holds nothing back. It fulfills its purpose silently and makes no claim.
It nourishes the ten thousand things, and yet is not their lord. It has no aim; it is very small.
The ten thousand things return to it, yet it is not their lord. It is very great.
It does not show greatness, and is therefore truly great.
Interpretation
The Tao is prevalent everywhere, it flows all around us, it is the essence of everything. It is us, and the life of what we perceive as the ten thousand objects. It has no preference for anyone or anything, there is no holding back. It simply flows and nourishes all. It constantly fulfills it’s purpose and needs no recognition, it gives yet it is not an idol of worship, it has no purpose. The ten thousand things are part of it, yet it does not claim to own them. It does not own them, because there is no separation. It does not reveal itself and boast, therefore it is truly great, it requires no applause, or gratification. Be the same as the Tao, nourish all and crave no attention.
