Chapter 20
Linda’s satnav made her jump, despite its soft, female voice suggesting that she take the next right. She was in the village of Lympne, just passing the back of Port Lympne Zoo. As she slowed ready to make the turn, her eye was dragged left, to where the perimeter of a tall cage came right up to the road. Two large wolves circled behind the bars, their sides brushing against the steel. The knot in her stomach tightened again.
She had now entered a housing estate, filled with pleasant family homes, forty or fifty years old perhaps, constructed back when estates were made up of logical rows of semi-detached houses rather than a warren of turns and traffic-calming measures. It meant she could see all the way along to where the road came to a dead end and the row of houses turned to face her. The pointer on her satnav told her that Ian’s was one of the last on the left before the dead end. She rolled the car to a halt, though she was still some distance from Ian’s door.
This was it.
Ian had done as he said he would. His door number and postcode had appeared as a message on her phone within seconds of her ending the call. Her feelings had been mixed when they had come through. She had half expected him to send an apology, to say that it wasn’t convenient after all. But she had his address now. She had what they needed.
She got out of the car and started walking. The camera in her buttonhole would be capturing the whole street, her whole approach to Ian’s door. The houses passed slowly to her left and to her right. Number nineteen was prominent on her left, the estate agent’s board skewed at an angle on the edge of the front lawn to confirm she was at the right place.
The gate out front came up to her hip. It squeaked as she pushed her way through. Suddenly, she was struck by the feeling that she was there as a trespasser — there to do wrong. Guiltily, she took a moment to look around, to see if anyone was out on the street and taking notice of her. A man was out on the other side of the road wiping his car. She remembered passing an elderly woman who had been down on her knees tending to flowerbeds, her backless gardening shoes peeling away to show the cracked skin of her heels. She didn’t reckon either of them had even glanced at her. She didn’t look out of place. Why would she? She lived in an area like this — good people with good jobs going about their lives.
She knocked the door. The answer took her breath away.
‘Girls! I told you not to answer that door!’
Ian’s shout sounded like it came from the back of the house. But it was two children that stood in the doorway. There was no mistaking they were sisters, one a slightly older-looking version of the other.
