South Asia consists of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Some definitions may also include Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Tibet. Many of these countries were once British colonies and part of the old silk and spice route to Europe and the Middle East.

South Asia is home to places of immense natural beauty and holds more than one–fifth of the world’s population, making it both the most populous and most densely populated geographical region in the world.

India’s population is 120 billion. Since the mid–1950s the government has tried to educate India’s people about the benefits of limiting family size.

The region has often seen conflicts and political instability, including wars between the region’s neighbors Pakistan and India, both of which have nuclear weapons. Both countries hope for peaceful coexistence, given their shared history and culture.

N is for Neighbors The South Asian region: Maldives, India, Nepal.
