He took his own plane—Well, not his own, but Renzo knew a guy. He’d made the decision to take this trip, make the leap, and grab on to the olive branch Syren was holding out. He made the decision after talking with Low, with Dax, with his therapist.

And he’d gotten Kane Ashby’s hushed phone call while the plane had been taxiing down the runway. Secret plans were concocted on that flight, Kane choosing to keep Renzo’s impending arrival a secret from his husband.

He couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t a mess inside. That he wasn’t on edge. Syren had a large group of men around him, all of whom Renzo knew by reputation only. Which meant this compound with its high walls and security cameras all over, guarded by armed men, was either the safest or most dangerous place he could be. The only people he’d brought with him were the two most important men in his life. There was no way he’d have been able to do shit without Low and Dax. They were out amongst the crowd of people, while Renzo followed Syren out the house and around back, along a narrow well-worn path that led away from everybody else and down to the beach.

He’d cried when Renzo stepped into the bedroom. Holding his child in one hand and her bottle in the other, Syren had taken one look at Renzo and started blubbering.

Syren Rua in tears? He couldn’t have ever imagined it.

The white-haired boy, yes? But this man, so self-aware and composed, so powerful and untouchable? No. But he’d shed tears for Renzo, and handed his baby over to his husband silently, kissed him on the cheek then grabbed Renzo’s hand and led him away.

The path down to the beach was well-lit with little motion-sensor lights stuck in the ground, flaring with every step they took. He followed in silence, still struggling to gather his thoughts. When Syren stopped, Renzo did as well.

Syren dropped to the soft sand, mere feet from the surf. He sat, elbows resting on his raised knees, staring out at the dark waters.

Renzo joined him.

And for a while, the only sounds that existed were that of the waves rolling gently onto shore, and the music and loud conversations drifting down from the party above them.

“I didn’t think you were coming,” Syren finally said softly.

Renzo didn’t look at him when he shrugged. “I didn’t think I was coming, either.”

“But you’re here.”

He felt Syren’s gaze on him so Renzo turned to him. A lock of hair hung over his forehead into his glittering eyes. That sight, coupled with his expression, sent the heaviest feeling of déjà vu slamming into Renzo. He remembered the white-haired boy looking at him with a similar look in his eyes, as if at that moment, Renzo held the keys to his survival. As if Renzo could whisper in his ear and make the nightmares disappear in a puff of frigid breath. “I’m here.”

Syren pressed his lips together. “Why?” The word cracked, but his gaze never wavered from Renzo’s.
