CHAPTER 34
Even before opening her eyes, Mal sensed that she was alone in the apartment. Silence had a weight to it, a presence and character of its own. She let out a sigh as she forced herself to sit up, opening her eyes and confirming what she already knew.
Sheâd been ditched by Cormac. For the second night in a row. The fact stirred no small amount of anger and frustration with her, and not all of it was directed at him. She recognized that it was at least partially her fault for insisting on so much of his time and attention. At the same time, what choice did she really have?
Mal worried about him much more than she let on. Lizâs death, along with Noah and Richter, had taught her a lesson that sheâd never known sheâd needed to learn, underlined a truth that sheâd had the privilege of ignoring. It was all just so⦠fragile, and so woefully finite.
Leaving Cormac to do as he wanted, at the mercy of his own self-destructive habits and bare-bones impulse control, was a recipe for disaster. She should have known better, stopped and thought about what could happen when heâd taken out the wine and begun pouring it so liberally.
Mal rubbed a hand along her cheek, remembering the weird vibe sheâd gotten from him during dinner. Heâd brought up Andrea so casually, almost in the same way Andrea had previously brought up Cormac. Like he was testing for her reaction, trying to get a sense if sheâd freak out if he started dating her.
She didnât like the reaction that particular thought stirred within her.
She shook her head, feeling ridiculous, sitting on the couch, lost in pointless thoughts about her dead sisterâs boyfriendâs son. Her almost-nephew. She was losing perspective. It didnât matter if Cormac was flirting with Andrea or sneaking around with Kiera. He was only her responsibility so far as honoring Lizâs memory went, and she needed to stop concerning herself with his life beyond that.
It would all be so much easier to navigate if Liz were still alive. Mal missed her sister every moment of every day. So much had been left unsaid between them, and it wasnât enough to just remember the time theyâd shared with fondness. She didnât know what she was doing without Liz to ask for advice.
It was just one of many problems which she now had to face on her own. Her thoughts shifted to Caster as she stood up from the couch. At least she hadnât had the nightmare this time sheâd fallen asleep. She wondered if seeing Cormac punch him had freed her from it for the time being, if not forever.
And there it was again. She shouldnât have invited him to the party in the Presidium. The way heâd faced down Caster had made her feel protected, true enough, but in another way, it had made her feel more helpless than ever. She should have been the one punching him, not cowering, not running away at her first chance.
