They made an interesting sight as they came painfully through the archway. Harriet was exerting herself to sit upright, but her hair was in wild disorder, and her white muslin dress black with dust. John, walking beside her and watching her carefully, had grazed knuckles, a streak of blood down his cheek and a tear in his jacket. Caroline was almost unrecognisable. Her hair was in as bad a state as Harriet’s, and looked much worse. Its chestnut masses rioted down her back and over half her face, but failed to hide that she had an incipient black eye, and that her dress was torn and even dirtier than Harriet’s. A filthy fichu was draped over her shoulders in an attempt to hide the worst of the damage. After a moment’s shocked silence everyone in the courtyard rushed to the rescue. The three of them were taken to their bedrooms. Scullions were ordered to fill kettles and set them on the fire, and a train of footmen was soon hurrying upstairs carrying steaming cans of hot water, together with a variety of restorative drinks.
