CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Princess Meredith lay on her back and tried not to give any sign of the fear that she felt, trapped down there in the hellish nightmare that was the Kingdom Beneath. The castle in which she lay might be grand, but she had seen the creatures that lived in the tunnels beyond, seen the evils that passed for normal life down here.
She ignored the discomfort of the stone bed in her quarters, her cell, focusing on more important tasks like not crying or screaming with the thought of everything that had happened to her.
She tried not to think about her kidnapping, or the fact that she had been left here in what amounted to a prison cell atop a tower. Instead, she focused on what had happened immediately before she'd been taken.
She'd made the old oak tree come back into full, leaf-covered life. Meredith had done that, no one else, and the thought that she'd managed it was still shocking to her now, even though for years, people had been telling her that she should be able to do it. That was why her father had insisted that she have instructors in the small magic, as if that would help her to reach the gift that he was sure that she had. It was why she'd been kept inside on her eighteenth birthday, to try to avoid exactly this.
Meredith had heard versions of the prophecy for so long, but she had always ignored them. She had assumed that it couldn't really be true, not if she clearly didn't have the gift that it required.
Now, she had demonstrated that gift on the old oak, and she had been taken, just as the magus' prophecy foretold. Meredith shuddered at the rest of the prophecy, at the thought of the kingdom being shaken to its knees, and the Kingdom Beneath rising up.
She thought instead back to the moment when she had restored the tree. When she had brought the dead tree back to life, it was as if a switch had been flipped inside of her, and suddenly she could feel the magic flowing through her veins, as if it had always been there.
It was exhilarating, but also terrifying. She didn't know how to control it, and now she was trapped in the Kingdom Beneath with no one to guide her. Meredith tried reaching for that power now, but she couldn't feel it there within her. It was as if it were locked away again inside her, dormant, so that she wasn't able to touch it.
Meredith concentrated. She knew that it had to be somewhere there inside her. She just had to find a way to get through to it. In this place of cold, heartless stone, the thought of her gift was the only thing that sustained her.
Footsteps outside her door brought her out of her thoughts, and she sat up, clutching the blanket around her. The door creaked open, and a figure stepped into the room.
Meredith shrieked in horror at the sight of it.
