“Seriously? I finally get to meet them?” Darlene plopped down on top of her bed at the B&B. She gave Dixie a skeptical look. “Are they going to show up this time? Or am I going to wind up at someone else’s ranch?” She was beginning to think the men didn’t really exist.

Dixie scoffed at her. “Of course they’ll be there. Yes, I know. It’s been hard as hell to get you three together, but things have been crazy at the ranch. Cattle getting out, horses getting sick. They’ve hardly had time to see me, much less to meet you. I mean I didn’t want you to meet them when they were all sweaty and stinky from working the herd.”

Darlene didn’t doubt her. Dixie was a big believer in first impressions. She always set up meetings with boyfriends with all the details planned in advance. The bigger the show of an introduction, the better. The time, the setting, even the way the man was dressed was all choreographed down to the smallest detail. Her sister should’ve become an event planner.

“Besides, you’ve been kind of busy, too. Why didn’t you tell me you went to the bar again last night?”

She wasn’t about to tell Dixie what had happened. It was bad enough that the town’s gossip mill had already outed her for going to the bar again. Had they mentioned Weston? She hoped not. “It was an impromptu thing.”

Once again, Dixie proved she was a smart woman. “You met someone there, didn’t you?” Her sister hopped onto the bed beside her. “Oh, my God. Was it the same guy? Did you hook up with your hookup guy?”

“I’m not saying a word.” Especially not hookup. Weston was no way a hookup. He was more than that. At least, she hoped he was. To think of him as only a booty call would be like insulting him. Besides, why did she need to say anything when the gossipers in town would more than likely do it for her? Plus, this time she was going to play her sister’s game. The longer she kept Weston a secret, the better. She and her sister needed to focus on one thing and one thing only. Getting Dixie’s men checked out.

“You know what this means, don’t you?”

She paused, not sure she wanted to know. “It doesn’t mean anything.”

Which, of course, was a flat-out lie. But had their time together meant anything to Weston? He’d yet to call her.

“Of course it does. It means he’s not a hookup.”

I sure hope not.

Still, she wasn’t about to admit it. “No, it doesn’t. People have relationships that are based entirely on being booty calls.” She tried to act as though the idea didn’t bother her, but it did. Was she just a booty call for Weston? Her stomach churned to think she might be.

“But not you. Not this time.”

Their conversation was going nowhere. At least, nowhere she wanted it to go. She had to change the subject. “So when am I supposed to show up? And don’t forget to give me good directions.
