CHAPTER 14
The rest of their lunch was fairly uneventful. Jane wasnât sure what Evan was hiding and why, but that didnât matter to her. He could have his secrets if they didnât affect Tyson and Libby. They werenât together anymore, and she had no say over what he did and why. Technically, she didnât have a say over how he dealt with their children, either, but she would fiercely defend them if she felt they needed it.
Besides, maybe it was better for her to not know. Did she really want to learn heâd gone off to a beach somewhere and partied with a bunch of women? Or if heâd become a regular at some bar sheâd never heard of in some distant town? She didnât think knowing would help things. Maybe it was better for her sanity if he kept that sort of thing to himself.
When Jane left the restaurant, she sat in her car and watched Evan walk to a small, older compact car before driving away. She watched the blue top of the car for as long as she could before she lost it in traffic.
She was staring after it when her phone began to ring. Distantly, she dug for her phone and answered.
âMs. Barrow,â the low voice on the other end stated. âThis is Justin McCormick.â
Jane completely forgot about her ex-husband then. âYes, how can I help you?â she asked.
âI have it on good authority that Shawn Jenkins was at my job site today while I was at lunch. I kind of thought that was a little suspicious.â
Jane had to admit that he was right. âWhat was he doing there?â
âI didnât ask because I didnât want to raise too much attention to it. But if you wanted to come back and talk to the guy he was supposedly visiting, Iâd be inclined to let you.â
Jane didnât like how he had framed his sentence. She wasnât a fan of when men told her they would âletâ her do anything. âI see. Well, I was just coming back from my own lunch, and Iâm finished for the day. I could head over there now if youâd like. It might take me thirty minutes or so, depending on traffic.â
âPerfect,â he said. âSee you soon.â The dial tone let her know heâd hung up.
Jane lowered her phone to the cup holder in the center console of her car. Sheâd planned to go home and get ready for Evanâs visit, but it seemed she had at least one stop to make before she could head home.
*****
Jane slipped between the fence just as Justin McCormick spotted her. He walked toward her, a grim look on his face.
âEverything okay?â she asked.
He gave a curt nod. âSo far, but now Iâm going to be on high alert. If something happensâ¦â he let his sentence trail off.
âIâm sure itâs going to be fine,â she said, but sheâd been wondering the same thing. Sheâd been inclined to think that Shawn Jenkins was innocent, but what was he
