And still river under black sky with stars.

Late.

A deer moves through the clearing. Pauses. Dilated nostrils puffing frosted mist against the dark.

Moves on.

* * *

Soft gray quiet.

Stillness.

An eastern sky in brushstrokes of pastels fading to deeper blue of night over prairie.

Suddenly sun.

First light on hills pale, flickering then holding. Brightness racing down the slopes.

Sun bursts on water, sparkles reflecting new dawn.

Two ducks in a lee, long necks bent back, bills tucked under wings. Webbed feet tread water slowly, hold the ducks static against the weak current of the lee. First sun catches preened feathers, bares brilliant hues. They sleep, their oval bodies casting dull shadows on dark water.
