Chapter Twelve

We were less than a week away from the wedding, and I was surprised at how much Christy had handled on her own. I was thrilled about it, too, because she was taking a lot of stress off of me. I planned on taking the day before my wedding to spend with my bridesmaids, Amanda and Christy, and my mother. It wasn’t a large wedding party, and that was nice because we were going to get our hair and nails done, and then we were going to go out to lunch. Just a fun girls’ day before the wedding.

“Mia, what are you doing back in this candy store?” Mom asked me as she opened the back of the display case. She had a tray of candy corn fudge in one hand, and she pulled out an empty tray with the other.

I shrugged. “Christy has done so much of the wedding preparation for me, that I don’t have a lot left to do. I’m sure I’ll start panicking the day before, but for right this minute, I’m fine.”

“It’s been my pleasure,” Christy said, leaning against the counter.

“That candy corn fudge smells heavenly.” I looked over Mom’s shoulder at the tray.

She smiled. “Would you like a piece?”

I nodded. “I would love a piece.”

She got a piece of wax paper from behind the front counter, cut a small piece of fudge, and handed it to me. “Christy?”

Christy nodded. “I would love some.”

She cut a piece for Christy and then put the rest of the fudge into the display case. “How is Ethan doing?” she asked me.

“He’s working overtime on the case, but he promised me he would take the day before the wedding off, and rest and relax. Not that I’m going to get to see him that day since we’re going to get our nails done and go out to lunch. But I’ll see him at the rehearsal and dinner.”

She nodded. “I can’t wait. It’ll be nice just having a day with you girls.”

“Me too,” Christy said. “I haven’t gotten my nails and hair done in forever, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Mom patted her on the shoulder. “I’m going back to the kitchen to see what Linda is working on. She’s been doing a great job learning to make the fudge and marshmallows.”

I nodded. “That’s great. That means we can all take vacations at the same time and trust that the candy store is going to be fine.”

Mom chuckled as she headed back to the kitchen. “I don’t know if I’d go that far just yet.”

“Soon,” Christy called after her.

The candy store door opened, and Pastor Phillips walked in. He smiled when he saw us. “Well, how are you two ladies doing today?”

“We’re doing great,” I said. “How are you? And how are things going with the new church?”

He nodded and came up to the front counter, leaning on it. “The insurance is going to send us a check, and we’ve been looking into what we can do to replace the old church.
