CHAPTER FOURTEEN

âTheyâre too large, but Iâm not picky,â Zarah said as she pulled the knee-length leather boots on.
The rest of the chest contained various mementos and knickknacks looted from the few adventurers who had made it this deep into the dungeon. At the bottom of the chest, I found a few gold coins and added them to the others. A bible devoted to Castigous contained two parchments. I studied them for long moments before realizing they were related to the summoning sigils.
Zarah looked at me with curiosity. âAnything worthwhile?â
I continued to study the fascinating theorems laid out on the parchments. âThese are far more advanced than my current understanding of magic, but theoretically I could learn summoning magic from them. This helps explain how she was able to set up the summoning circles around this level. Itâs very difficult magic.â
Zarah looked around the room. âCan it summon us out of this place?â
âThatâs not how summoning works. You place something into a temporal void then summon it back later. Whereas a necromancer might animate a skeleton, a summoner must first store something into a state of suspension. Then he can summon it later. Such as a dagger or food.â
âThat doesnât sound very impressive. Iâve seen magic pouches that can store large things like that.â
âYes, but a summoner can place living creatures or even spells into a temporal void. I believe that wraith stored these peopleâs life force into these sigils and could release it under her control whenever she wished.â
âIt doesnât seem very helpful in our current predicament,â Zarah said as she looked behind a curtain only to find a stone wall. âI think ââ she began to say before she paused. She looked down at her foot, which had stepped upon a small rug. She stomped several times before looking up, a smile on her face. She whipped away the rug, revealing a trap door.
âI knew there was something here.â
I joined her and inspected the hidden door. A metal rung rested in an indention in the wood so that it would not protrude past the flat surface. âAnd how did you know that?â
âBardâs intuition. Sometimes an expedient exit from a dire situation is warranted.â
I stuck the summoning parchments into my spellbook and stowed it before lifting the metal ring and opening the doorway. A ladder led down into darkness.
I closed the trap door and thought about our situation. Was going deeper into the structure the wisest decision? Each level brought new dangers and foes. Aside from Zarah, the entire population thus far had been hostile. The wraith had been correct â we did not possess a weapon capable of harming mystical entities. Only a blessed or enchanted weapon could affect such beings. I wasnât sure why the wraith had collapsed. Perhaps the shock of having her mortal vessel destroyed, coupled with the huge drain on her caused by summoning so many ghouls? Either way, weâd been fortunate.
Zarah placed her hand gently on my arm. âWhy are you hesitating?â
âI was just weighing our options.
