ALMI
âWho is he?â asked Galatea when I returned to the two women.
âMy friend from when I was a kid. Heâs been taking care of my sister for me. Ever since Poseidon sent me away.â Seeing Silos had forced out some of my new, softer feelings toward the ocean god, and reminded me of just what he had put me and Lily through.
âDo you still want me to visit your sister?â asked Persephone, voice gentle.
âYes! Oh my god, yes, I would love you to,â I told her. âThe next time we get a long enough break from these Trials, I would be so grateful if we could go to her.â
I didnât think Persephone could cure her, but I couldnât see how it could hurt. Any information would be useful, as would any slowing down of the process.
âOf course. Just use that rose I gave you to let me know you need me. Hephaestus made it for me. Well,â she said, frowning. âHades asked Hephaestus to make it for me. Heâs a little⦠shy around women.â
âIsnât he married to like, the ultimate woman, Aphrodite?â
Anger sparked in Persephoneâs eyes. âDonât talk to me about that witch,â she spat.
âNow, now,â chided a male voice, deep and lyrical. âYou mustnât speak ill of the Olympians.â Apollo appeared beside us with a shimmer of gold. And gold was the only word I could think of as I took him in. His tousled golden hair flopped down over gleaming golden eyes. His toga too was gold, and fastened with a huge, golden, lyre brooch.
âGood evening, Apollo,â Persephone said.
He threw a brief but devastating smile at her, then locked his eyes on me.
âYou, Almi, are very, very interesting. Who knew the old water goat had a wife?â
I shifted uncomfortably. âWell, the whole world knows now.â
âYou are a sea nymph, yes?â I nodded. âThenâ¦. Why do you have air magic?â
My stomach clenched, both with excitement and nerves. âYou can feel my magic?â
âSugar, Iâm an elemental weather god. Of course I can.â
I swallowed. âIâm only just learning how to use it,â I admitted. Poseidon had said that Apollo wasnât a threat, and if he could feel my magic, there wasnât much point lying to him.
He grinned at me, and my chest tightened. He was frigging beautiful. Not in the same way as Poseidon â not at all. Poseidon was solid-mass-of-deep-and-mysterious-power kind of beautiful whereas Apollo was joyous-to-look-at kind of beautiful.
âWant a tip?â
âSure.â
âYou canât control air. It is almost as wild as the ocean, and it may not be as strong or powerful, but everything relies on it. Everything. It has all the power.â
I blinked at him. âI canât control it?â
âNope. Donât even try. If you can win over the wind, youâll have an ally for life, but you canât bend air to any will.â
I tried to process his words. âSo, how do Iââ
Before I could finish my question, he was gone, striding toward two women with tree bark for skin and green hair.
âAir magic?â Galatea was staring at me like Iâd grown a second head.
