Chapter 27

It was getting toward the end of the day. Louie headed over to The Spot. I took Morton for a walk before we joined him. We followed our usual path. Morton sniffed every other fence gate, got close and personal with the two fire hydrants, and gave a friendly bark to a half-dozen other dogs along the way. Finally, we joined Louie in The Spot.

“A Summit IPA?” Mike asked as I headed down the bar. Morton had the leash pulled taut as he pulled me toward Louie’s usual stool.

“Yeah, and better pour another round for Louie,” I said.

Louie had a handful of pork rinds for Morton by the time we came around the end of the bar. “Great to see you, Morton. I’ve been waiting. No doubt, Dev held you up.” Morton hurried over and inhaled the pork rinds in a nanosecond.

“How’d your day go, Louie?” I asked just as Mike set our drinks on the bar. Louie drained what was left in his glass and slid the empty across the bar to Mike. “It’s suddenly getting better,” he said as he pulled the fresh drink in front of him. “What’s shaking with your Kozlow woman?”

“Oh, you mean Phoenix Starr.”

“Yeah, I forgot that was her name. It seems to fit her appearance a lot better.”

“Yeah, she’s something, all right. I spoke with her yesterday. She’s a bit depressed, which is only natural. I think the autopsy on Sterling was scheduled for this afternoon. Unless they find something unusual, I’m guessing they’ve either already released the body, or they’ll release it tomorrow.”

“If it’s just the bullet, they’ll release. Anyone looking like a suspect out there?”

“Yes and no. As far as I know, there’s nothing much to go on. Maybe they’ll get fingerprints or a hair sample or something from the car. There was this phone call where he supposedly set up a meeting with some woman, but—”

“The meeting was going to be at that bar with that goofy name?” Louie said.

“Yeah, Scuttlebutts. He was shot in their parking lot. I know the cops have his cellphone. Phoenix told them about the phone conversation she overheard where the meeting was mentioned. Hopefully, they can trace the call, and it will lead them to the murderer. But who knows? As for Phoenix, she’s had this whole thing suddenly inserted in her life, and you know, it takes some time.”

“It takes a lot of time, and that’s under normal circumstances. Something like this, hell, it could be years. You know if she’s doing a funeral?”

“She mentioned a memorial service. I don’t think anything is scheduled, but it’s still early in the process. Apparently, his will stated he was to be cremated and that his ashes were to be scattered at a lake place they have up north somewhere. That’s about all I know.”

“Crazy world,” Louie said.

We both took sips from our respective drinks. My cellphone rang just as I set my glass down. I glanced at the screen, Jeremy Robins.

“Oh, good. Hey, I’ve gotta take this, Louie.
