Emily retreats to her room for a little while that evening.
I donât want her to feel like she has to spend all her time with me and Teddy, but I also donât ever want her to feel like she has to hide away in her room, either.
So once Teddy is down for a nap, his post-mall ice cream sugar crash knocking him out a bit earlier than normal, I knock quietly on her bedroom door.
âHey,â she says, her voice much more quiet and subdued than normal. âWhatâs up?â
She pulls the door back and retreats to sit on her bed, so I take that as an invitation to step into her space, though I lean back against the door jamb.
âI just wanted to apologize again, for earlier. I spoke too quickly and didnât consider where you were coming from. Plus, it wasnât really my business in the first place.â
âYouâre right, it wasnât.â
I blink, slightly surprised by her bluntness but deserving it in the same breath.
âBut I also canât expect you to know everything going on in my head,â she continues. âSo Iâm sorry for lashing out at you. I very easily could have explained that to you without being so aggressive.â
Something odd pulses in my chest as we talk, at the way Emily is speaking to me. It feels strange having her be soâ¦honest. So vulnerable and transparent with me about whatâs going on in her mind.
Part of me thinks itâs wonderful, but at the same time, I canât help comparing it to Melody. To the way she could never seem to be real with me, something I only noticed later in our marriage. She didnât talk to me. Didnât share the important things on her mind.
Having Emily be in that space with me, having her trust me with those stories and her emotions when Iâve given her no reason so far to do soâ¦itâs incredible.
And a little too much.
Which is why I default to a joke to push us out of this tension-laden moment.
âI donât mind when you put me in my place, though,â I tell her. âMelody used to do it all the time, and over the past few months, my head has maybe gotten a bit too big and full of itself.â
Her lips tilt up at that. âWell, Iâm always happy to put you in your place. You know that pretty well already.â
I nibble on the inside of my cheek and fight to keep my eyes off that tiny scar on her lip. The one I want to kiss more and more with each passing day.
Clearing my throat, I step to the side so Iâm in the doorway.
âI also wanted to make sure you know you donât have to hide in here when youâre not working. I think you mentioned the Keifers had you in a separate studio, so all that space was yours. But here, I want to make sure you know you can spend time in the living room, in the yard.â I pause. âIn the kitchen, making tea in the middle of the night.
