They raced out of the house ten minutes later, and were well on their way as the first light of dawn filtered over the horizon. Miranda drove in silence, unsure of what—if anything—she could say to make things better. Chloe chewed on her thumbnail and watched the familiar landmarks come and go.

Finally, after what seemed like hours, the bridge appeared in the distance, and Chloe’s heart pounded in time with the rhythm of the tires.

“Almost there,” she said.

Miranda nodded grimly, fingers white-knuckled around the steering wheel. She slowed when they reached the curve in the road Chloe had seen in the vision, then slipped to nearly a crawl when they reach the accident scene. The semi was cleared to the side of the road, as a tow truck loaded up the minivan. A lone police vehicle sat on the opposite shoulder, an officer waving them around the tow truck.

“Wow, it’s really here,” Miranda murmured. She pulled over, and Chloe jumped out of the car before she could even come to a full stop.

She searched the area frantically but saw no sign of Ethan’s Mustang. The police officer approached.

“Miss, you need to move along,” he said. “You can’t stop here.”

“Please,” Chloe said breathlessly. “I’m looking for a friend of mine. He was driving a blue Mustang. Tall, blond?”

The officer shook his head. “Miss, you need to move—”

“Please!” She grabbed the man’s arm on impulse but released it quickly when his face darkened. “I’m sorry! Sorry!” She held up her hands and took a breath, forcing a note of calm into her voice. “Please. My friend. I just need to know if he was hurt. His name is Ethan. He’s about six feet tall, blond. Driving a blue Mustang.”

The officer took pity on her and shook his head. “Miss, there was no Mustang involved. Now, you really need to move along.”

“You’re sure?” she asked.

“I was one of the first on the scene,” he said kindly. “Your boyfriend wasn’t here.”

“Oh, he’s not my—” She rubbed her hands over her face as the relief finally hit her. “Never mind. It’s not important. Thank you.” She ran back to the car, meeting Miranda halfway.

“What’s happening?” she asked.

“He’s not here. He wasn’t here.” They started back toward Miranda’s car.

“I don’t get it. Then what happened?”

Chloe finally felt like she could smile. “I don’t know. But he’s alive.”
