Part 5: City

I awoke after only a few hours with the urgent need to pee because of all the water I’d drunk before going to bed. Apparently I was now fully hydrated. It was still light outside. I arose and made my way to the latrines on the other side of camp. The camp was bustling, but few people seemed to be hurrying as they had when I’d gone to bed. People were lounging around campfires in small groups, few of them wearing armor. A few men catcalled to me as I jogged past in my underwear. I ignored them. I surmised that the fighting was over, and we were camping out until the morning. I wondered if we would be going back the way we came or moving on to deal with another army of monsters. Since things were apparently calm, I took off my bra for additional comfort before cuddling up to Luna and going back to sleep.

I awoke again in the middle of the night. I could tell Luna was awake already because she was breathing, so I hugged her a little tighter. She rolled onto her back and smiled at me. My stomach growled and we both giggled. Luna pointed at the tent flap and raised her eyebrows. I nodded and put my bra back on before going outside.

I started cutting up another onion to grill while Luna attempted to revive the fire from the few coals buried in the center of the campfire. Unfortunately, there weren’t any hot enough to ignite the tinder we had.

“No fire, I guess,” Luna said quietly. “Unless you want to go borrow some or start one the old-fashioned way.”

“Borrowing some is the old-fashioned way,” I exposited. I was feeling relaxed “The oldest humans couldn’t start fires, so when they came across some caused by lightning or whatever, they’d take it back to camp and build a campfire for it, then keep it going for years. Archeologists have found ash pits ten feet deep from fires like that.”

“They found one twenty-two feet deep in a cave in China,” Larissa said suddenly from behind me. “They think it burned for generations, not just years.”

I turned and smiled at Larissa. She was, unsurprisingly, wearing only her panties, but she had her belt in her hand. “Oh, cool,” I said. “I couldn’t remember the details.”

Larissa smiled back--God, she’s gorgeous--and sat down between the fire ring and our meager supply of remaining wood. She started shaping pieces for a friction fire starter, then paused. “Are you guys in a hurry? I can start the fire now, if you are.”

I shook my head, figuring Larissa had earned the chance to start a fire the “fun” way if she wanted to. She went back to her work with another dazzling smile.

After a minute of silence broken only by the sounds of Larissa’s and my knives, Larissa asked, “How’d you know that, about the prehistoric fires?”

I shrugged. “I read it in a history book.”

“Were you a historian?” Larissa asked.
