The day went well, with Arthur making more mistakes than Jean. It made Jean feel good and it didn’t hurt their schedule. They still made up time.

“Great job today,” David said. “You were both excellent. Arthur, be a little better prepared on Monday, though, okay?”

“It wasn’t my fault. I couldn’t hear my cues.”

Of course it wasn’t his fault, Jean thought. He did nothing wrong. She was fine with her cues. She spoke loudly and clearly. He just missed them. But he wouldn’t admit that. God, he exhausted her. And to think she had to go out to dinner with him in a few hours. The thought turned her stomach anew.

“You’re both released for the weekend. Have fun.”

“Thanks, David,” Jean said.

She drove home, filled with dread at the forthcoming evening. She should have told him that she’d changed her mind, but she didn’t so now she’d have to spend a few dreadful hours with him.

Jean dressed quickly, with little care given to how she looked. She made sure she would look good for pictures, but didn’t go overboard so Arthur would think she had dressed up for him. She was ready when the car arrived at seven.

She was taken to The Pearl, a fancy restaurant on Sunset Strip. She knew this was an opportunity she’d have to take advantage of. The press were outside the door, as well as teeming inside.

The lights flashed as soon as she stepped out of the car.

She heard people calling her name, but ignored them.

“Miss Sanders! Miss Sanders!”

She fought through the crowd of reporters.

“Miss Sanders,” someone called. “Miss Cranston is here, too. Are you meeting her?”

The question made Jean stop in her track. Maggie was there? Her heart skipped a beat. Maybe they’d have a moment to speak. She had butterflies in her stomach. She felt like a teenager with a crush. But she couldn’t help it. She was hoping to see Maggie.

She finally got herself together and turned to walk into the restaurant. Arthur already had a table. He stood and kissed her cheek when she walked up.

“You look beautiful, Jean.”

“Thank you. You look quite dapper.”

He was wearing a gray sports coat with black slacks and a white shirt.

“You’re too kind,” he said.

When she picked up her menu, he took it from her.

“No need to waste your time. I’ll order for you.”

“I am fine ordering for myself.”

“Yes, but I know the restaurant. I know what’s good. I’ll order for you.”

Jean fumed internally. She wanted to rip her menu from his hands, but didn’t want to make a scene. Instead she glanced around the crowded venue, hoping to catch a glimpse of Maggie. There were too many people there. She couldn’t see her.

“You know,” Arthur was saying. “I think you and I should date more often.”

“What? Why?”

“I really like you, Jean. And I know you like me. I mean, what woman in America wouldn’t want to date me?”

“But, Arthur, it would be so awkward on movies where we costar. Like now. Things could be awkward on the set tomorrow.
