The tea was delicious, and I thanked Ned again for being so welcoming as I stayed in the bookstore for a while longer to wait out the storm. My nerves must have been on edge from all the weird stuff that had been happening lately because I had the feeling that everyone kept staring at me. Aside from my wet cat, I’m not sure that I had anything of interest for them to be looking at. I held onto Persephone tightly while I browsed around the bookstore. I didn’t want to take the chance of losing her again. Not that I minded the handsome stranger coming to my rescue, but I was starting to feel like an intrusion.

I found a book that had a lot of interesting looking pictures in it, and since I couldn’t understand the language that most of the books were written in, I chose this one to sit with while I waited. At least I could look at the pictures if nothing else. I went to sit down near the hearth because Persephone’s wet fur was starting to make me cold. She squirmed once I sat down and I let her out of my arms just enough for her to lay down next to me and dry her fur in front of the fire.

“Can you read that?” the man who had helped me to retrieve Persephone asked.

“No,” I said. “Can you?”

He shook his head.

“What language are all of these books written in?” I asked.

The three of them all stared at me without saying anything until it started to get uncomfortable.

“Oh various old languages from around the world,” Ned said as he walked over to see which book I was looking at. “That’s a good one you have there.”

“Can you read them all?” I asked him. Honestly, I didn’t know how this bookstore could stay in business if no one could even read the books here.

He shrugged his shoulders and smiled. “A few.”

I chatted casually with the other woman for a few minutes. She told me how she was just recently hired at the bookstore and how she was enjoying learning how to fix the old book bindings. She was pretty and had the most beautiful eyes. I guess that must have been why the two men couldn’t seem to keep their eyes off of her. I laughed to myself thinking about how jealous Juniper would be if she was here and saw the hot, goth-looking guy, fawning all over this woman.

I hoped that she hadn’t been trying to call my phone all morning since I had left it at the house. Juniper was not only a best friend; she was like a second mom. She would be all sorts of worried if she’d been trying to call and I hadn’t picked up my phone. I looked over at Persephone and wondered when she had become so much work. Then I answered my own question when I remembered that tarot reader. I still didn’t believe in all that crap, but I did have to admit that the coincidental timing of everything was definitely eerie.
