Tobias paces restlessly. “We should get going.”

I look up from the edge of the pond where I’ve been trying to coax Fainli to come up and meet the Beast and her sons. “Just a few more minutes.”

He folds his arms over his chest. “That’s what you said half an hour ago.”

I arch my brows. “Is the storm over?”

He looks up at the top of the mountain, where ash still covers the sky, and sighs. “No, but we can go out the other side. The mountain will block most of the wind.”

Reese, who sits cross-legged on the ground nearby, checks his watch. “We probably do need to leave. There’s no telling when a time shift will happen, and we haven’t even begun our search.”

I flop back down and splash my hands in the water, but Fainli remains a shadowed shape beneath the surface. Don’t selkie need to come up for air?

Across the basin, Flint plays with the fire beasts in their nest while their mom hovers over them, completely underwhelmed by the miracle now living with them. Not that the miracle will come to the surface.

Finally, I give up on luring the selkie out and roll onto my back. “What direction does the wand say to go?”

Reese stands and pulls the wand from the plastic pipe clipped to his vest, holding it out in front of himself as he paces in a slow circle.

Curious, I hold up a hand and Tobias grasps it to pull me to my feet. Noticing our movement, the Beast leaves her nest and slinks over, her red eyes fixed on the witch.

At last, Reese pauses, holding the wand out. “This way, I think.”

“You think?” Tobias demands.

“Well…” Reese turns in a circle. “I’m also picking up a signal in this direction, but it’s fainter—”

He cuts off with a yelp as the Beast lunges forward, knocking him off his feet. An arrow bounces off her hide where Reese had been standing, and we all stare in shock.

All except the Beast, who launches across the basin, her wings spreading to catch the air.

I whip around, squinting at the side of the mountain, and spot a flash of white hair from the direction Reese originally pointed. Another Donald, and the Beast has him in her sights.

“Don’t kill him!” I shout as she soars through the air after him.

He scrambles up the side of the mountain, dropping his crossbow in the process. He must not have the power to hyper-speed, though, because she swoops in and snaps him up in her jaw.

“Don’t swallow!” I shout as she folds her wings and drops back toward the ground. “He’s full of nasty magic that will hurt you! Spit him out right now!”

As soon as she gets near the ground, her jaw opens, and Donald falls the remaining distance, where he tumbles through the dirt. It sticks to his drool-covered body, turning him into a mud goblin.

Reese raises a hand, and a circle of magic springs up around him.

“Hey, Donald,” I wave from a safe distance outside the barrier.
