Chapter Twenty-Three
âWhere have you been?â
Beatrix, lugging Blackwellâs projector into the house, didnât have a chance to answer Rosemarie and Lydiaâs simultaneous question. The two of them dragged her into the study and shut the door, both hissing additional questions at a quarter of their usual volume. She supposed they didnât want to wake Miss Masseyâit was already past ten.
âJust watch this,â she said, turning the machine on.
Lydia gasped as she recognized Dockett. Rosemarie whispered, âTurn it off!â
âWhat?â Beatrix said, befuddled.
âRoot cellar.â Rosemarie gestured at them to follow her. âQuietly.â
Beatrix tiptoed down the stone stairs, wondering if more was afoot than courtesy to sleeping tenants, but decided to hold her questions until after the show.
The effect on Lydia was electric. She watched, rapt, as the drama unfolded, unable even to pace.
âBee,â she said, grasping Beatrixâs hands as the projector shut off, âhow did you get this?â
âAn insider,â Beatrix said, wishing she could tell her the truthâwishing she could talk to someone about how conflicted she now felt about Blackwell.
She didnât realize she was missing the flow of conversation until the sound of his name brought her to attention.
âWhat?â she said.
âListen, for heavenâs sake!â Rosemarie managed to convey more irritation in a whisper than Beatrix would have thought possible. âThe bus Meg and I took went past the Key on the way out of Baltimore tonight, and whom did we see waiting to cross the highway? Our omnimancer.â
Her stomach clenched. Of all the bad luck ...
âI knew he was in on it,â Lydia said, crossing her arms.
âHeâs not,â Beatrix said.
Rosemarie poked a finger toward her. âThat was him talking to Dockett.â
Pomegranate ghosted up her throat as she tried to come up with a reply. Heâd told her not to tell anyone what heâd done. The new Vow held her to it, the film falling into the categories of an activity of his and something untoward.
âIt doesnât sound like his voice,â she finally managed, feeling desperate.
âWhy are you defending him after what he did to you?â Lydia said, which wasnât after all so far off the point.
But heâd helped her. Whatever his reasons, heâd helped her.
âI know when this was filmed,â she said. âAnd I know exactly where Blackwell was at the time, because we were in the same room.â
Lydia hmmmâd. Rosemarie rolled her eyes. âSo there are two wizards working on the anti-League project,â she said.
âDonât forget he checked our house for spells last month,â Beatrix said, thankful he had allowed her to reveal that.
âOr cast some, having been given convenient access by persons who will remain nameless.â
âThink whatever you want,â Beatrix snapped, âbut weâre not going to tell anyone our guesses about which wizards are behind this. It wonât matter to the League. It wonât matter to the newspapers.â
âI think it would matter to the newspapers,â Rosemarie said.
âUnless you promise me you wonât mention Blackwellâs name, Iâm not going to let you show this film,â Beatrix said, only just managing not to yell.
âBeatrix Harperââ
âOh.â Lydia stared at her. âOh, I see.â
âYou do?â Beatrix said, hoping her sister had put two and two together.
