Chapter Fourteen
There was a decided chill in the house that hadn’t been there the morning before. Though too early in the season to bother with a heat source of any type for the short period before she left for work, it was predicted that the day would be colder than the previous one. Delia dressed in warmer clothes before leaving her room. The house was silent as she filled the tea kettle with water. Her cousin had left hours before. As Delia moved around the kitchen, she wondered anew at the reasoning behind Hazel’s indecision.
Did her cousin truly wish to spend the majority of each day in the kitchen at Glennon Hall? Would she not be just as happy, if not happier, to spend time in her own kitchen at home? With Arch sitting at her table, a cup of coffee in front of him as he read the newspaper.
As much as she enjoyed the thought for her cousin, Delia wondered what that would mean for her. She should look around the town of Glennon more closely. Perhaps there were serviceable rooms that she could rent? Of course, there was also the option of living on campus as many of the other faculty chose to do. Some of the larger dorm rooms were reserved just for them. If nothing else, it would be an acceptable short-term solution to give Hazel more privacy to get on with her life.
The sound of the tea kettle interrupted her thoughts. After fixing the tea, she moved over to the table to make the toast. Someone had left the newspaper open as though to draw her attention to it. Hazel rarely took the time to read it in the mornings before she went to work. It was something she did in the evenings, during her quiet time.
Perhaps Arch had left it for her? She wondered at his intent as she set the first slice of bread into the toaster. After plugging it in, she returned to her teapot to pour a cup. She carried it over to the table to take a seat with the newspaper in front of her. That was when she noticed the headlines.
It couldn’t be. She lifted the paper in both hands to read the lengthy article above the fold, her teacup forgotten. After the first paragraph, her eyes sought out the byline. Mel Eakin, the gruff newspaperman who begrudged the inevitable arrival of women into his field. She should not have been surprised. She could hardly expect to see Nessie Wareham’s name above the fold. Not in such a prominent position.
The smell of something burning barely registered at first as she continued to read the article. By the time she realized it was her toast, the slice of bread was burned beyond recognition. Delia leapt to her feet. After unplugging the toaster, she used a fork to spear the charred remains. She opened the kitchen door and threw it outside.
Leaving the door open behind her to air out the kitchen, she returned to the newspaper.
