Chapter Eight
The “Top Producer’s Meeting,” as Gwen referred to it, was to be held, to Bitsie’s surprise, in Olga Jameson’s home. Perhaps, Olga’s “investors” were mostly the types who were impressed by genuine gold-plated bathroom fixtures and black marble porticos. It was a psychological technique. In such surroundings, Olga and Jason’s poor, misguided marks would be much more easily talked into believing they, too, could live in garish splendor if only they invested enough in InstaWealth365.
Bitsie clutched nervously at the handle of her tote-bag. She’d left Shady Grove with Gwen, and they’d set off for the meeting in Gwen’s car, but not before Bitsie had made a trip to the bathroom, where she’d texted both Nick and Liz, explaining where she was going. She didn’t tell Stan and warned Liz to inform him on a strictly need-to-know basis.
On the way to the meeting, Bitsie had found out what “vetted” meant. She was supposed to bring a stack of money with her. She wouldn’t be expected to give up her money on the spot, Gwen insisted. It was all part of the “Wealth Genesis” process. New recruits were taken through a “guided visualization,” Gwen explained, where they stared at a stack of one-hundred-dollar bills and imagined them multiplying.
“But what if I decide I’m ready to invest?” Bitsie asked.
“You certainly can invest on the spot, if you feel ready. But there’s absolutely no pressure. The program sells itself.”
After that, they’d stopped off at an ATM, so Bitsie could withdraw her own personal stack of hundred-dollar bills to use in the visualization process. Bitsie couldn’t resist asking why all the participants couldn’t use the same stack of hundred-dollar bills at the meeting. It sure would save a lot of people making trips to the ATM and carrying around ridiculous amounts of cash, but Gwen explained the visualization wouldn’t be nearly as effective if you didn’t do it with your own money.
It must be a test. Anyone willing to go to an ATM and withdraw a thousand-dollars-worth of bills was both in possession of a thousand dollars to invest and trusting enough to tote it around at the behest of strangers.
Just as Bitsie and Gwen pulled up at Olga’s house, Gwen said, “You know, Monica really had it out for these people for some reason. She even went so far as to tell me the two of them were having an affair.”
“Olga and Jason?”
“Yes, I don’t know why she’d make up such a horrible rumor, just to try to convince me to pull out of their business?”
Monica probably wasn’t the source of the rumor about Olga and Jason’s affair. Although, it could be just that, a rumor. She’d keep her eyes open and see if she could uncover anything to support or refute the theory, although what bearing the shenanigans of those two could possibly have on Monica’s disappearance, Bitsie couldn’t imagine.
Bitsie had no idea what to expect as she looked around Olga Schmidt’s spacious living room. There were about twenty “power investors” present at the meeting.
