CHAPTER TEN

Date night was a success.

From the beaming smile on Toby’s face as Brooks walked him to the door of the cottage, Toby had as much fun as Brooks had wanted. Brooks leaned in to kiss Toby’s cheek, but Toby pulled back and swallowed.

“Will you come in?”

His mate’s heart beat so fast in his chest, but he held Brooks’s gaze steadily.

“I’d love to.”

Toby took his hand and led him inside. “I don’t want… Um. I wanted…”

“Breathe,” Brooks said gently. He touched Toby’s face and ran his fingers along his neck. “I can go.”

“No! No, I’m just nervous but… I really want to kiss you, and I know the guards are outside and probably watching, and I didn’t want them to… not that they care because I’m sure they’ve seen things that… I mean, I’ve met Nick. But anyway, I wanted to kiss you. Is that okay?”

Brooks had never felt so much happiness in his life. His heart leaped, and he was sure his smile was bright enough to light the entire compound. “That’s more than okay.”

He’d never wanted this much in his life. He ached with the need to touch his mate, to claim him and mark him. But Brooks wasn’t some animal who had no self-control. He would give his mate what he wanted and nothing more.

Toby reached up and touched his face, tracing his fingers along Brooks’s jaw, mimicking the way Brooks touched him. Brooks’s hands shook as he placed them gently on Toby’s waist.

Using Brooks’s shoulder to hold him steady, Toby pushed up on his toes and brushed his lips across Brooks’s. The urge to claim, to devour Toby’s lips thickened, as did other parts of him. But Brooks held still, letting his mate explore at his own pace.

Gentle teasing kisses soon became hungrier ones, and Brooks opened his lips to Toby’s questing tongue. His mate’s arms went around his neck, and Brooks held him tight as Toby tasted him. He made little whimpering sounds that became more frantic the more he explored.

And Brooks realized suddenly that his mate truly had little to no experience. The thought sent a shudder of want through him once more, and he tightened the reins on his control.

Toby’s clumsy kisses stoked those flames, though. Everything about his mate lit that fire within Brooks. Toby didn’t know what he was doing, but he didn’t need to. His instincts were pure and sweet and everything Brooks wanted.

After several long minutes, Toby pulled away, gasping for breath, his eyes wild. He squeezed Brooks’s arms and stared up at him with red lips, which he immediately began chewing. “Brooks.”

It would have been so easy to take control, to simply pull Toby tight and show him how things should be. He did the first part, but refrained from the second. He held his mate close and breathed into his hair. Toby clung to him, a telltale bulge resting against Brooks’s thigh.

“That was amazing.”

Toby eased back and looked into Brooks’s eyes, no doubt hunting for some sign of a lie.
