Slam!

The heavy wooden door came crashing down behind Ellona as she entered the side entrance of the building. Every inch of the tangy smelling space saturated in a green overcast. The floorboards rippling with ribbons of glimmering rays, specked with starlike crystals of light— pure gold. Her heart leapt in her chest, running rampant in her ears as she stepped further into the light— like mist it swirled and evaded her step, rolling on top of the floor.

“Hello?” She called out into the room, waving an arm about, to dismiss more of the magical smoke. “Hello?” She called out again, taking another step forward, thudding in her ears.

Ellona’s chest tightened like a vice— a soft trickling of sweat seeping from her brow as a snap echoed along the walls. A snap of fingers. In an instant, the glow diminished, leaving a warm amber candle hanging from the ceiling the only light in the room. Blinking to adjust to the change, she sucked in a breath, holding it until she should see clearly.

It was a shop, walls lined with bookcases, overflowing with crystal decanters of liquids, glowing in various colors. A rainbow of toxic liquid scrolled along the walls. The mixture of herbs and fats tinged the air, tickling Ellona’s nose. Curiously, she crept forwards still, her neck craning back and forth as she glanced at the bottles, the herbs dried and hanging from the ceiling. A couple of rabbits tied up together by a foot, also dancing from the rafters.

“Hello?”

A smooth voice rippled from behind the long wooden counter, tucked in the far back of the shop, just barely touched by the light of the candelabra that hung in the center. “Your Highness, just a moment.” Like silk, it rolled over the space.

“Um— ok?” Clasping her hands behind her back, Ellona took a small step towards the counter, chewing the inside of her cheek.

The countertop was smooth and recently wiped with water, cleaner than the bookshelves that held a thin layer of dust. Books and tomes unlike Ellona had ever seen sat in stacks on the end. Towering high about the countertop with a variety of dyed leather covers. Each embossed with a language she could not read. Tùsti perhaps? The language of the Elves.

Finally, a woman popped up from behind the counter and Ellona screamed. Her heart surging from her chest as she stubbed backward, tripping on her robe. Scrambling to remain balance, she shot her finger out to point at the woman. Her long white hair, draping down to the knee, hanging freely around her face. A ruby circlet keeping it out of her eyes. Her eyes— beautiful golden nuggets, flecks of red and orange leaving an ethereal gleam.

“You—“

“I?” The woman gave a coy smile, pulling her hair back behind a pale-yellowing ear, arched to the heavens, pieced with jewelry that dangled down to her chin, encrusted with rubies. “You know who I am—“ she chewed the corner of her lower lip thoughtfully. “Or time has not been all to kind to me.
