That plan took on an even greater urgency during a game for the University club, in between the Super Rugby and provincial seasons. I considered it a privilege to play club rugby, felt like I had now found a club I could love, and tried to turn out for University whenever I could. Club rugby was my chance to bump into reality again, and I thrived on that. Unlike my experiences at Hamilton Old Boys, at University the guy whose spot I was taking that day would be ripping the jersey off his back to give it to me, potentially because he was far too hung-over to play anyway and could now get back to the bar.

One Saturday afternoon I had pulled off something of a miracle play in a game to which the opposition fans responded with ‘You’re at your level now, Donald. If only you could do that for the Chiefs!’ I would hear much worse in the years to come, but I’d be lying if that didn’t sting me a little that day.
