EIGHT

Fi was on dishwashing duty that night when Gabriel came up from behind and wrapped his arms around her waist. It didn’t bother her in the slightest. In fact, she’d come to like being enveloped by his warm embrace, his strong arms and chest her temporary refuge from the world.

Until he started kissing the crook of her neck, and the china she was rinsing under the faucet almost slipped out of her fingers.

“Gabe!” she whined, not really doing much else to chastise him. It was futile to resist this brand of proximity when she’d been yearning for it all day.

“Sarap ng dinner, mahal,” he murmured against her cheek, his breath tickling her ear. “The pork was so tender, and it was seasoned so well. You’re going to give your mom a run for her money!”

“Yes, please continue praising my adobo and let mom know the next time she calls,” she said with a smile, taking pride in her culinary smarts tonight. She might not be as skilled in the kitchen as Diana Legaspi, but she knew how to cook a mean pork adobo. Among a few other dishes. Maybe she’ll try beef kaldereta next.

“I most certainly will. Thanks for dinner.”

“You’re welcome.”

“You know…you don’t have to finish washing all these just to prove to me you’re fit to work.” He held her left wrist and freed it of the pan she was now scrubbing. “You already made dinner, let me take care of this.”

Fi turned around and flicked her wet fingers to his face. He scrunched his nose when the droplets hit him. Cute.

“It’s Tuesday, hyungnim. I don’t report for work until Monday,” she pointed out. “Too much rest makes Fi a dull girl.”

“My girl? Dull? Never.” He kissed her brow once, then her nose. “Now, will you leave this to me?”

She simply said “No” and returned to her disrupted chore. Defeated, Gabriel released her from his embrace and instead started placing the rinsed dishes on the wooden rack. “Do you know what your schedule’s gonna be like when you get back?” he asked.

“Less demanding than usual, maybe?” Fi supposed, washing off soap suds from the last pan. “Yihwan’s the only active member of my band right now, and we’ll mostly spend time at the studios, so—you can stop worrying about me.”

“Oh, but I like doing that, though,” he said, handing her a dishtowel so she could wipe her hands dry. “And I like taking care of you.”

She took the towel and smiled at him. “And how can I repay your kindness, Mr. Park?”

“There’s no need for that.”

“Really? No favors, nothing?” Fi threw the towel over her shoulder and pressed her wet hands against his chest instead, the firm wall of muscle under his gray cotton shirt responding to the contact. She watched as the smile on Gabriel’s face became a look of confusion, then curiosity.

“What was that for?”

Heat rushed up her cheeks when she stepped up to him. This close, his warm scent seemed to beckon to her, fueling an urge to bury her face in his neck.
