Governor Hewitt (Mac) McConnell was seated at the head of the table, his back to the door. When Sandy and Baker walked in, he turned in his chair and nodded a greeting to them. Then he turned his attention back to the large monitor on the wall at the far end of the room.

The monitor was spilt into four sections, each displaying various bits of flowing computer code, some of it all green and scrolling so fast across the screen it was hard to read. Other bits of code were flashing either yellow, or red, and were scrolling much slower, or frozen in place.

Sandy put her hand on the governor’s shoulder and said, “Sir, it’s not necessary for you to be here. As a point of fact, it might be better if you weren’t. Plausible deniability and all that.”

“That’s exactly what I tried to tell him,” Cora said. She looked weak, and a little gray. Cora had recently finished her last round of Chemo treatments, and the medicine had taken its toll. She’d lost all her hair, and was now as bald as Delroy. But instead of wearing a wig, or scarf or hat, she wore her baldness as a badge of honor.

The governor reached up and patted the top of Sandy’s hand. “No one needs to worry about me.” Then he tipped his chin upwards toward the far end of the table. “Besides, after the shenanigans these three pulled off last time they were in the state’s system, I think it’s best someone keep an eye on them.”

The Pope twins, along with Wu, all stopped what they were doing and looked at Sandy, then the governor. Nichole got up, walked over, said hello to Sandy, then sat down next to the governor. “Mac, you asked for our help. That’s why we’re here. For you. Let’s not dredge up ancient history, especially parts that no one has ever proven.”

“Or even tried,” Nicky added.

“You’re lucky you’re such a sight,” the governor said to Nichole. He had a devilish grin on his face when he spoke. “It clouds my judgement and sense of right and wrong. And let’s be clear…you guys were the ones who alerted us to the situation to begin with.” Then the grin went away as if it had never been there, and he said, “And you’re not really here for me, you’re here for mine.”

“Potato, tomato,” Wu said.

Nicky let his head droop, then shook it back and forth. “It’s not potato, tomato, Wu. It’s potato—”

“Will you guys please shut up?” Becky said. “I’m trying to work here.”
