Oh yes, I would. Trinidad headed for the dining room. The chatter of voices greeted her as she crossed through the lobby. She’d not gotten to the threshold when she heard a groan.

Harry stood in a corner opposite the hostess check-in desk, holding Renata’s wrist, but he was taking pains to keep his face turned from her.

“Don’t worry. It’ll be okay. I’ll get help.” He opened one squinched-up eye. “Trinidad, Renata needs help.” Still holding her hand, he lurched a step backward, knocking over a poinsettia in a decorative basket.

Renata yanked away. “It’s a small cut, you big oaf.”

“Are you okay?” Trinidad hurried over. “What happened?”

“Just a slit on my finger. All I need is a Band-Aid, and this guy is acting like a tourniquet is in order.”

“Blood’s a serious thing.” Harry breathed hard out his nostrils and didn’t look at Renata. “It’s so…you know…leaky.” His wide face paled.

Renata shoved him into a chair. “For goodness’ sake, how do you do your job? A tiny drip of blood…”

Harry groaned. “Don’t say drip. Please.”

Renata heaved out a breath. “I don’t have time to prop up a queasy carpenter. Trinidad, can you grab me a bandage from behind the desk? I don’t want blood on my clothes.”

Trinidad fetched one, unwrapped it, and fastened it over Renata’s cut.

“Thanks. Crisis averted. I want to be sure that the extra table is set.” Renata yanked a look at Harry. “You aren’t going to pass out or anything, are you?”

Harry leaned his head against the varnished wood behind him. “No, ma’am.” He dared a look at her and smiled. “But it’s real nice of you to worry about me.”

“Goofball,” Renata muttered under her breath as she scooted by.

Trinidad wanted to follow Renata into the dining room but she wasn’t totally sure Harry wouldn’t topple over like a kid’s block tower. “I’ll get you a glass of water.”

“Nah. I’m all right. Deep breaths will do the trick.” He wiped a hand over his sweaty face. “Do you think she likes me?”

“Renata?”

“Yeah. She sounds annoyed with me and everything, but maybe deep down, right? I sure had the hots for her in high school.” He rested his thick forearms on his thighs. “She went with Jeremy to the prom even though I could have told her she was his third choice.” He paused. “So do you? Think she likes me?”

“I couldn’t say. I’ve got to, um, go see if the milk is hot.” If he was fit enough to entertain a love match, he probably wasn’t going to faint.

“You know, ’cause I’ll be leaving town soon in case I get some sort of encouragement from her to stay.”

Don’t hold your breath. But if the number one suspect on her list was leaving town…she might never get the chance to ask her questions. “Harry, before I go, did Gabe tell you anything about why he was taking the long way into Sprocket?”

“Dunno. Figured he wanted to do some bird-watching or something. That’s what I told the cops.”

“But Gabe doesn’t know a thing about birds.
