THE LEGEND OF THE ADOBE’S LADY IN WHITE

The legend of the lady in white populates many haunted locations in California and beyond. The Southwest regions largely associate this female phantom with La Llorona, a distressed earthbound ghost who incessantly screams in agony by a water source after the death of her young children. Other famous sightings of this phantom white spirit have occurred at Old Town’s El Fandango Restaurant, Escondido’s Elfin Forest and the RMS Queen Mary. As for the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, there is an entirely different theory for the origin of its ghostly female adorned in white clothing. When the San Diego Paranormal Research Society commenced both its Spirits of the Adobe tours and private research of the premises, we were told by adobe docents that the lady in white seen on the property is most likely the ethereal being of Ysidora Forster Fuller Couts Gray, one of the daughters of Cave J. Couts and Ysidora Bandini de Couts.

There is a historical reason why many people believe that this ghost is the spirit form of this particular Couts daughter. Remember that the younger Ysidora lost the property to foreclosure, which caused her to deal with depression and sadness. However, the elder Ysidora, the matriarch of the family, might choose to remain at the rancho as a way to oversee its use in modern times. Based on seven-plus years of intensive historical and paranormal research of the property, both Ali Schreiber and I strongly believe that this feminine phantom may be Ysidora Bandini de Couts. Perhaps there are two lady in white spirits, both mother and daughter.
