CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Olga had pulled the car onto the verge two hundred yards behind the little grey Ford.

‘What the hell is going on there?’ asked Basil, Olga’s companion, as they both stared out of the window and observed in the distance a man waving his hands in the air and staggering towards John Hawke’s rented car.

‘Is the fellow drunk or what?’

‘It’s “what”, I suspect,’ observed Olga dryly. ‘In other words, a bloody complication, that’s for certain.’

Basil groaned. He was remembering Sir Jeremy’s anger at the lack of success in their endeavours and the threat that his words implied. And now here, in Olga’s words, was another ‘bloody complication.’

The pair stared in silence, mesmerised at the activities of Johnny and Susan and the staggering stranger, as though they were watching some strange silent film, a mixture of Max Sennett and Cecile B. DeMille. All that was missing was the tinkling piano accompaniment.

Once the stranger, who was obviously in some form of distress, had been helped into the back of the car it had set off once more, Olga revved up in readiness to follow.

‘This is a bloody farrago,’ muttered Basil to himself, rather than his companion, but Olga could not have agreed more.
