The Uncle

The next morning, Heather awoke feeling refreshed. So much had happened on the first day of the investigation that she was exhausted by the end of it and slept soundly. Now she was ready to face the day and some new interrogations.

First, she made sure that Lilly had a nutritious breakfast with a Spiced Cider Donut on the side and took her dog and cat for a quick walk. Then, after Eva and Leila had arrived to keep an eye on Lilly, she headed over to the police station with Amy.

“I couldn’t sleep at all last night,” Amy said.

“Really?” asked Heather. “I think I was out as soon as my head hit the pillow. Possibly before. I don’t actually remember hitting the pillow.”

“I was too nervous to sleep.”

“Are you worried about the case? I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it.”

“No.”

“Then, are you worried about your wedding? You and Jamie have plenty of time to make plans. You can do whatever you want. And I will be a dedicated maid of honor.”

“No. It’s not wedding planning. I’m stoked about that. And I’m not even going to start it until after the holidays. But it’s the holidays I’m worried about. Most notably Thanksgiving dinner. And I know that I was pushing to get Josh to take over the meal plans. But now I’m afraid. What if he doesn’t serve turkey?”

“Of course he’ll serve turkey,” said Heather.

“I don’t know,” said Amy. “Yesterday Jamie said that Josh was asking about what would make a good entrée. Why do you need to consider what entrée to serve on Thanksgiving if you were planning on making a turkey?”

“Maybe we should pay him a little visit today,” Heather said, thinking that Amy might be on to something. “After we talk to some suspects.”

“Good idea,” Amy agreed.

Then talk turned to the case as they reached the station. Ryan and Peters were happy to see them.

“Uncle Lester just arrived,” said Ryan. “We’re about to begin questioning him.”

“Then we have perfect timing,” said Heather.

“Not quite perfect,” said Amy. “Now we don’t get a donut break before we begin.”

“I think we’ll survive,” said Heather. “And I am very interested in what Uncle Lester will say.”

They headed to the interrogation room where the man had been seated and was sipping a coffee.

“Are you ready to talk to me now?” he asked.

“Yes,” said Ryan. “We have a few questions.”

“I have a few as well,” said Uncle Lester. “Why would someone do this to Paula? Why choose Thanksgiving? And which member of the family do you think did it?”

“Those are actually some pretty good questions,” said Amy.

“Yes. But we’d like to ask them,” said Ryan.

“Can you think of any answers to those questions?” asked Heather. “As Paula’s uncle, you might have some insight as to what happened.”

“I don’t know who would have done it. Everyone got along with Paula,” Uncle Lester said. “But the killer needed to be after her if he spiked a dish that only she liked in her house.
